AC Valhalla Rued Choice: Should You Spare or Kill Him?

Killing or sparing Rued in Assassin’s Valhalla is yet another choice you have to make. Rued can either live and answer for his crimes or be awarded instant justice in the form of death.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is, in essence, a story-driven RPG that encompasses choice-based gameplay in its core. As Eivor, we are tasked with many story-altering choices during the main storyline. The Rued choice is no different. Letting him live will come back to haunt us while killing him instantly will be going against an ally’s wishes.

1. Should You Kill or Spare Rued?

During the East Anglia Arc, Eivor believes that Rued has killed his friend and ally Oswald. In retaliation, Eivor mounts a full-fledged attack on Rued’s castle. Rued and his wolf are, in the end, defeated in combat by the wolf-kissed. Wherein it is revealed, Oswald is indeed alive but was only imprisoned by Rued.

Here you will be presented with the choice to kill Rued or let him live to face the justice system (which is what Oswald wants). Now Rued is not someone you’d want alive but going against your friend and ally’s wish is not wise. So, what happens in both of these paths?

Letting Rued live in AC: Valhalla will improve your friendship with Oswald, while Rued will remain as a possible threat. Killing Rued, on the other hand, will make Oswald unhappy even though he will still be an ally to the Clan.

i. Choice 1: Kill Rued

If you decide that Rued is the bigger evil that needs to be uprooted right away, then choose the prompt to kill him.

Killing Rued in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will lower your relationship with Oswald and prompt Fenrir to join Raven Clan. Oswald will, however, still stay an ally to Raven Clan.

Finnr will thus join the Raven Clan, and this will also eliminate any future fights and trouble from Rued.

ii. Choice 2: Let Rued Live

Letting Rued live in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will improve your relationship with Oswald, while Rued will be arrested and stand trial. Fenrir will not join Raven Clan straightway and will decide later.

Fenrir’s decision to join the Raven Clan will now further depend on a future choice. On the other hand, Rued will live on to fight another day, and he will return! If you have not played further, stop reading now as there are major spoilers ahead about the consequences of your choice; CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED!

2. Consequences of the Rued Choice

If you had killed Rued during the first choice, then there will not be any danger at the Wedding Horns Quest. You’ll just recruit Finnr, and that will be the end of it.

On the other hand, if you had let Rued live, then all of it will come back to bite you at the Wedding ceremony. Rued will escape his imprisonment and crash the wedding, asking Oswald for a duel. You will be given a choice to let Oswald fight or fight on his behalf.

Stepping Up for Oswald

Stepping in on behalf of Oswald will impress Fenrir, and he will join the Raven Clan, which is just another cherry on the cake. Even if you allow Oswald to fight for himself, it will be clear how he has grown as a fighter since he actually wins the battle against Rued. Oswald once again will let Rued live to banish him from East Angelica. In this case, Fenrir will remain with Oswald.

I think letting Rued live is the right thing to do since it is, after all, Oswald’s territory, and his word is the gospel. The second choice can be totally based upon your desire for Fenrir. For me letting Oswald fight for himself felt like the right thing to do, and I didn’t have much use for Fenrir either way.
