SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from Hogwarts Legacy.

If you’re an avid gamer and a Harry Potter fan, your time has come! Hogwarts Legacy is a recently released RPG that will take you on an adventure as the magical universe’s “Chosen One” in 1899.

A little game background here: Your player will be a new kid enrolled late into Hogwarts, who can tap into ancient powers that no one else can. This game’s main villains are the goblins, led by their leader, Ranrok, and Victor Rookwook.

If you’ve already finished the game and want to understand that intriguing ending a little more, here’s a full explanation for it:

At the end of Hogwarts Legacy, the player will face a decision that will either make them a “good” or an “evil” Keeper of ancient powers, after they finally defeat the game’s main villain, Ranrok.

This game, like many of Harry Potter’s narratives, reinforces Dumbledore’s famous quote, “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

Since you can only play out either one of the endings, I bet you are curious to know what happened in the alternate ending. Let’s get into a more detailed view of it!

Ending Set-Up

Hogwarts Legacy

There are two possible endings in Hogwarts Legacy — the one that turns your character into a good hero and the other that leans more on the dark side.

With the story building up to the final face-off with Ranrok, you’ll find your character running along with a bunch of other students and professors to find the goblin leader in the Repository underneath Hogwarts. Here is where you will have a different ending based on your choices.

1. Hogwarts Legacy’s Good Ending

At this point, you’ll find your character to be all alone with Fig, both making their way to the Repository — leading up to the game’s big, defining choice.

Fig will inform you that you will have to take over as the Keeper, which of course, comes with immense magic. Then he asks you what you intend to do with this power.

Choosing to respond with the dialogues “I intend to keep it contained here” and “I shall keep it secret forever” will take you to the “good” ending.

Once this conversation is over, you will reach the Repository and battle with Ranrok, who then transforms into a dragon — this chapter’s final antagonist. While you and Fig will initially struggle to win the battle, you will eventually win and seal off both creatures and the ancient power. The one loss you will suffer is Fig, who passes away due to dealing with too much ancient magic.

2. Hogwarts Legacy’s Evil Ending

The premise for the “evil ending” is identical, all you need to do is choose the response, “I intend to open it,” when Fig asks you about being the Keeper. You have to double down on your decisions by arguing “this power should not be kept from the world.”

The ensuing battle with Ranrok follows, and instead of sealing the ancient powers away, you absorb it. Mysteriously enough, although Fig is assumed to pass away during the battle, it is not depicted in this ending.

3. Hogwarts Legacy’s Final Ending

After playing out either of these two endings, you will be taken to the final “epilogue” leg of the ending. There are a bunch of mini-scenarios and tasks left for you to complete and depending on what you choose, you’ll have a different gaming experience.

The important scenes here are:

  • Professor Black and Professor Weasley paying homage to Professor Fig in the Great Hall.
  • A conversation with Sebastian Sallow, who reveals to you that Victor Rookwood is responsible for cursing his sister, Anne.
  • Your house being rewarded for your brave battle against Ranrok, thus winning the House Cup.

These endings also set up expectations for an upcoming sequel for the game, especially since we ascertain that Victor could be the overarching villain. Plus, loads of unanswered questions surrounding your player’s ancient powers! Consider us hooked for sure.
