Eivor was in pursuit of a member of the order who stole a crystal ball while visiting Vinland. While apprehending him, he came across the tribe Kanien’kehá:ka and left the artifact in their care. This very artifact was present in Connor’s village in AC 3, establishing a connection between both the games.
AC 3 is set in the year 1754, way past Christopher Columbus’s discovery and the naming of America. So, the Vinland featured in 1754 is already modernized and referred to as a part of North America.

After these are complete you’ll be able to unlock Vinland, while talking to Randvi. You can meet Nessa at the docks in Ravensthrope who will take you to Vinland on a boat.
