There’s just a little over a month for the official launch of Horizon Forbidden West, but there is some trouble in paradise. In some unfortunate news, it appears that the game’s pre-release build has leaked, and spoilers are already circulating online. So, it’s not the best time to surf gaming-related forum boards. And don’t worry, there are no spoilers ahead.
Horizon Forbidden West is easily one of the most anticipated games of the year, but it may suffer the same fate as The Last of Us Part 2, where some critical elements of the story ended up getting leaked months before its launch. Forbidden West is an open-world game that emphasizes the game mechanics more than the story, but the story is nevertheless vital to the experience.
It started with some Horizon Forbidden West PS4 screenshots with Russian subtitles appearing online. Sony quickly reacted to this and took them down due to “a report from the copyright holder.” The leak was later confirmed to be authentic by VGC sources, and the leaked build contains all the content planned for the final release, except for some missing assets and other minor improvements.
The images show Aloy in some undergrowth with a companion and Aloy creeping up on a machine through dense vegetation in a small canyon.
The theory is that hackers were able to gain access to the files by using jailbroken PS4s. This is what happened to Elden Ring back in December, where dataminers gained access to some key story elements, characters, and endgame content, before sharing all of this data online.
As of writing this, the game files are not on any file-sharing sites, but this could change at any time. Sony is aware of the situation and is doing what it can to stop the spread of the leak. But, as is with everything on the internet, once the dam walls have broken, there’s no stopping the flood.
