AMD’s Cheapest Next-Gen Graphics Card RX 6500 XT Has Been Announced

The chip shortage continues to frustrate gamers, but companies have been on a roll with announcing a slew of new products that probably will never make it into the hands of those who want them the most. AMD has added another entry to this list with their latest announcement of the AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT.

The graphics card is aimed at the entry-level market, promising high-end performance at 1080p for a very economical price. The GPU will have a sustained clock speed of 2.6GHz, 16 compute units, and 16 ray accelerators to support ray tracing.

It will feature support for Windows 11 AutoHDR, DirectX 12, and AMD Fidelity FX Super Resolution. The GPU is based on AMD’s RDNA2 architecture, will feature 4 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, and will offer some impressive framerates on modern titles.

AMD reported that they were able to achieve 108 fps on Resident Evil Village, 95 fps on Age of Empires 4, and 78 fps on Halo Infinite. All games were reportedly played at 1080p and “high” settings, but no further details were revealed regarding the graphical settings or the system set-up on which these games were played.

During the presentation, AMD’s spokesperson stated that these framerates were only possible using FidelityFX Super Resolution. While it is not a one-to-one competitor to NVIDIA’s DLSS, as it lacks AI learning, the tech functions similarly.

The game is run at a lower resolution, and AI upscales the resolution for better output. The drawback is that not every game supports AMD’s FSR, so that some titles will produce far lower frame rates.

AMD is looking to push the RX 6500 XT as a value proposition. They promised up to 35% better performance when compared to the NVIDIA GTX 1650 while also providing modern graphic tech such as ray tracing.

It will also be priced at $200, but this price tag will be short-lived. With the current chip shortage and massive demand for GPUs, this card will most likely go for double or triple the price at most retailers, if it’s available at all.
