AMD CPUs are Back at MSRP and Resellers are Not Happy

AMD has decided to fight against the profiteering resellers and the global chip shortage by bringing a lineup of its best gaming CPUs back into stores. It seems there is now an abundance of chips available today at, after long last, MSRP worldwide!

It has long been expected that the six- and eight-core Ryzen 5000 CPUs would finally end the ongoing chip crisis, making finding graphics cards an arduous task. But now, the Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 7 5800X both could be spotted at, or at least very close to, their MSRP for most of the year.

It has been the enthusiast-grade processors with large core counts built with 7nm chiplets that have been difficult to get this year.

Since launch, the Ryzen 9 5900X has managed to stay away from its $549 MSRP, and no way could you get the Ryzen 9 5950X anywhere close to its $799 price tag. Luckily this is no longer the case as both the Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 9 5950X have been widely available at MSRP.

Availability of the fresh Ryzen 3 5300G, Ryzen 5 5600G, and Ryzen 7 5700G APUs are still sketchy right now, but even they are available close to MSRP at most retailers.

Data engineer Michael Driscoll has kept a close eye on the resellers market such as eBay and StockX. He has suggested that the price turn for AMD’s CPUs had greatly diminished the profitability to buy and upsell.

The Zen 3 market on eBay and StockX is now almost boring, which is a wonderful thing. Gone are the days of last year where it was impossible to get a Zen 3 CPU for 1.4-2.4x its retail price. Now you can buy one at MSRP easily, and a used one for less than MSRP.

He went on to say in his Zen 3 market report,

A similar story plays out for the 5900X, most dramatically on May 6 where Antonline made it available for $585 and sold over 600 CPUs, and they also made the 5950X available for $879 and sold over 700 CPUs in a week. Antonline sets a maximum on eBay for pricing and by now it’s unprofitable to scalp Zen 3 CPUs.

Curiously, AMD’s desktop market share has actually seen a decrease of 2.3% between the first and second quarter of the year, according to Mercury Research reports. AMD’s overall x86 market share has increased by 1.8% during the same time, primarily because of server and mobile chips’ sales.

But it’s great news to see AMD Ryzen 5000 prices drop back to MSRP, particularly for the high-end chips. There are even some Ryzen 7 5800X deals that drop $40, bringing the excellent gaming chip closer to Intel’s Core i7 10700K. Likewise, the Ryzen 9 5900X at $549 may not be a deal but is back to its normal price.

We’re hoping that the GPU market follows suit as well, but that might not happen for many months. Thankfully, AMD’s Radeon RX 6600 XT has been readily available since its launch earlier this week and is a relative bargain by today’s pricing standards.
