AMD X670 Extreme, X670 & B650 Chipsets for AM5 Motherboards Unveiled

The fantastic run that AM4 has had for over five years is coming to an end. During Computex 2022, AMD announced the AM5 socket as the new home of the upcoming Ryzen 7000 CPUs. Unfortunately, this platform won’t be supporting the existing Ryzen CPUs from Ryzen 1000 to 5000.

Why, you may ask? This is because AM5 will feature the new LGA 1718 socket, implying that Team Red won’t be opting for PGA (Pin Grid Array) anymore. Instead, the tech giant is embracing LGA (Land Grid Array), just like Intel.

This migration to LGA means AMD will now meet enthusiasts’ increasing demand for next-gen features such as PCIe Gen 5 and DDR5.

Features-wise, the motherboard platform will offer up to 24 PCIe Gen 5.0 lanes for storage and graphics, over 14 USB ports supporting 20 Gbps and USB-C, 6-E Wi-Fi, and up to four HDMI 2.1 & DisplayPort 2 ports.

The cherry on top is that all these features will be available across the three new game-changing AM5 chipsets that the company announced at Computex, out of which AMD X670E is the most opulent one.

AMD claims that the X670E chipset, where E stands for Extreme, is made for “Unparalleled Capability and Extreme Overclocking” as it comes with new features and most connectivity options.

It supports PCIe 5.0 for two graphics slots and one M.2 NVMe SSD port to end up as the flagship offering for the upcoming motherboard.

Up next is the X670, designed for “enthusiast overclocking” with PCIe Gen 5.0 support for storage and graphics depending on board makers.

There’s a chance that some board makers will opt for a cost-effective route and provide PCIe 5.0 support only for the GPU while keeping storage restricted to PCIe 4.0.

Lastly, there’s the budget-friendly B650 chipset that will arrive as a successor to the B550 motherboards and offer PCIe 5.0 only for storage.

Both X670 chipsets will arrive in a dual-PCH design on the motherboard, whereas the B650 will sport a single PCH.

Now coming back to AM5, one of the most standout features that AMD revealed for the platform is SAS or Smart Access Storage.

This technology is based on Microsoft’s DirectStorage, where GPU decompression is performed using AMD Smart Access Memory and other related technologies to speed up load times and texture streaming of a game.

Given the leaps AMD has taken, it looks set to give Intel serious competition in the quest of both companies to conquer the market.
