AMD might be expanding its Zen3D and AM4-based lineup with new CPUs

AMD’s next-gen Ryzen 7000 CPUs based on the AM5 platform with Zen4 cores are set to release in fall 2022. The CPUs provide PCle 5.0 and DDR5 support. With DDR4 support missing, something that Intel is providing with its Raptor Lake processors, AMD thinks that users will be reluctant to shift to the AM5 platform just yet.

AMD announced Zen3 with 3D V-cache last year with the Ryzen 7 5800X3D being AMD’s first endeavor in such a complex consumer CPU, so the company is still in a process of learning how to utilize 3D V-Cache technology in the best way. Although more SKUs were expected, we didn’t see many announcements regarding Zen3D from AMD as the cost of a dual 3D chiplet would be too great.

A leaker Greymon55 claims that AMD might be launching more Zen3D parts with AM4 branding. However, only Zen 3D is mentioned, indicating that the Ryzen 5000 series will receive new CPUs. With more cache and an 8 core/16 thread design. As AM4 is coming to its last days with the upcoming AM5 Ryzen 7000 CPUs, a more powerful and faster CPU would be beneficial for some users.

Seeing that the current Ryzen 7 5800X3D 8-core processor was well received by the tech press for its 3D Vertical Cache innovation that significantly improved gaming performance, putting it in the same league as Intel’s fastest 12th Gen Core “Alder Lake” processors, despite being based on the older Zen3 microarchitecture.

AMD is therefore looking to expand this particular lineup which could see possible CPUs like Ryzen 5 5600X3D, Ryzen 9 5900X3D, or perhaps even the 5950X3D become a reality. The introduction of such SKUs could be beneficial to AM4 users.

The leaker also suggested that AMD might be testing a Zen4 processor designed for the AM4 socket. According to the leaker, AM4 ZEN4 does exist in the lab, but whether it will be mass-produced and be up for sale is entirely up to AMD.

With larger caches and newer technology in an older platform, we could see a powerful gaming processor featuring less than 8 cores soon. More details on the Zen3D-based AMD CPUs should be out this month.
