AMD Reveals Upcoming Radeon RX 7000 GPUs Pricing, Specs & Launch Date

AMD’s Radeon RX 7000 series is based on RDNA 3 microarchitecture and TSMC 5nm chiplets. The GPUs will be competing against NVIDIA’s 40 series which features the efficient and powerful Ada Lovelace architecture.

AMD has unveiled the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and Radeon RX 7900 XT GPUs, sharing an early preview of their specs.

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX features 96 CUs which will deliver a stunning 2.3 GHz game clock speed. The GPU also includes 24GB of memory, running at 20Gbps on a 384-bit memory bus interface.

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT has 84 CUs, 20GB memory over 320-bit bus, and a game clock speed of 2GHz.

AMD had earlier received heavy backlash for lacking ray tracing support in its RX 6000 graphics cards. Soon after, the feature was included in the upcoming RX 7000 series, which include a new ray tracing accelerator compute unit. It is expected to deliver up to 50% improved ray tracing performance as compared to the standard rate.

To give an overview of the RX 7900 XTX’s performance, AMD provided a few instances of in-game framerates. The graphics card delivered up to 295 FPS in Apex Legends and 355 FPS in Overwatch 2 at 4K resolution.

The RX 7900 XTX touched 62 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K with Ultra ray tracing graphics mode whereas AMD’s RX 6950 XT managed up to 42 FPS with ray tracing enabled. In Dying Light 2, the RX 7900 XTX managed up to 32 FPS while the RX 6950 XT delivered 39 FPS.

NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 GPU delivered 83 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 and 104 FPS in Dying Light 2 at 4K resolution.

AMD did take some jibes at competitor NVIDIA’s 40 series lineup. Both the RX 7000 cards support DisplayPort 2.1, a feature which is missing in NVIDIA’s GPUs. AMD also mentioned the dual 8-pin power ports included in the RX 7000 series in reference to the controversial issue of RTX 4090’s 12-pin connectors melting.

The RX 7900 XTX is priced at $999 and the RX 7900 XT costs $899. NVIDIA does take the point in terms of pricing since even the most expensive variant of the RTX 4000 series is cheaper than AMD’s upcoming cards.

AMD is scheduled to launch the Radeon RX 7000 GPUs on December 13, 2022.
