AMD CPU Reseller Says Zen 4 Products may Be Compatible with AM4 DDR4

A rumor is roaming the net which came from Twitter handle “Greymon55”. He stated that as said by a reseller of AMD CPUs, the red team, AMD may be planning to bring Ryzen CPUs which will be based on the Zen 4 core architecture on the AM4 chip platform. However, the seller isn’t sure if the plan will work out.

It was already announced by AMD that either Ryzen or EPYC, the Zen 4 CPUs will only offer support for DDR5 memory. As one can understand, this suggests that there is no DDR4 IMC on the Zen 4 core. Suppose the red team, AMD decides to bring Zen 4 on the already existing AM4 motherboards. As AM4 is an all-DDR4 they would have to make special variants of the chip that has the necessary DDR4 IMC.

The Twitter handle, Greymon55 says:

According to an AMD CPU reseller, AMD plans to have AM4 DDR4 compatible Zen 4 products. But i’’s just a plan, not sure if it will be available

Additional info that was shared by TechPowerUp, says that Zen 4 chiplets will be featured in the new Ryzen CPUs for the AM4 motherboard. It also may be possible to be paired with the cIOD (IO die) that supports PCIe Gen 4.0 and DDR4.

AMD might want some action in the low-end and main segment first as AMD’s Ryzen 7000 ‘Zen4’ line-up might probably enter the high-end segment first. Robert Hallock of the red team, confirms in an interview that the AM5 and AM4 will co-exist, and also there might be brand new CPUs for the existing platforms.

AM4 + AM5 co-exist, still markets adopting AM4, from a global point of view, AM4 has a lot of life. There might be new CPUs for AM4, but nothing specific is planned now.

The red team might face a very tough spot against the blue team i.e., Intel as Intel’s Raptor Lake which will offer full support for the 600-series motherboards and along with that, they will support both DDR4 and DDR5.

It seems to be a very clever move by AMD as many people would rather change only the CPU instead of changing RAM and Motherboard. Also, this might take a toll on AM5 sales. However, AMD seemed to prove that they produce sustainable platforms and keep supporting them. No matter if the leak by the AMD CPU reseller will bear fruit, however, it would be a fascinating decision anyways.
