AMD’s New Tool Uses Undervolting To Boost Performance

Precision Boost Overdrive toolkit is all set to receive an update that enables adaptive undervolting for its new Ryzen 5000 series chips, giving it a nice little performance boost.

Scheduled to release in early December, this toolkit, titled Curve Optimization, is designed to enable lower CPU voltage consumption, and even though AMD hadn’t given any performance claims until now, they have revealed that the toolkit will easily boost the performance of the Ryzen 5000 chipsets by almost 10 percent!

Of course, hand-tuning a processor using the BIOS has been an option available to us for a long time now. However, things get a little complicated when we factor in the voltage usage. Depending on how you change it, it can either supercharge a processor by giving it the ability to reach a higher clock speed or end up with a processor that refuses to work at all.

This kind of situation is where Curve Optimization will genuinely shine by taking away some of the guesswork out of the entire process, considering how the toolkit can now boost the single-thread performance by 2 percent and multi-threaded performance by ten percent, as seen on AMD’s Ryzen 9 5900x.

The tool has internal sensors built into it that includes workload, temperature, and socket limit for quick adjusting of the voltage. AMD claims that Curve Optimization can do this up to 1,000 times per second. It also allows users to set parameters for how much adaptive undervolting is to be allowed.

However, some important details to note here are that the tool requires a BIOS update for 400 and 500-series AMD motherboard chipsets, including the AGESA 1180 update. Also, it’s been made clear that this tool’s use will invalidate the warranty on all related hardware.

Initially, the tool will be accessible from the BIOS only, but AMD plans to bring it to the Ryzen Master app on Windows for ease of access from the desktop. Anyhow, if you’re someone that already has a Ryzen 500 chipset, be sure to stay on the lookout for the BIOS update, even if you do not wish to use Curve Optimization.
