Android 12 Will Bring a Fantastic New Feature for Gamers

Last month, Google announced the next iteration of its Mobile Operating Software (MOS) Android with much fanfare. At their Google I/O event, the tech giant detailed their most extensive redesign to the MOS so far, along with all the new features it will bring to Android smartphones.

Considering the beta version of the software, Android fans can expect robust privacy controls, updated quick settings, an overhauled aesthetic, and more. If you’re looking for a quick breakdown of the new features, we recommend tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee’s video that you can check out here.

While it’s clear that Android 12 will be a pretty versatile update, Google did not reveal any gaming-centric features at Google I/O. But, as it turns out, Google was saving gaming announcements for the Google for Games Developer Summit held earlier today. At the event, Google revealed a new feature that gamers will be able to access on Android 12: Play as you Download.

Welcome and mobile Keynote

Android 12 will allow gamers to boot up games before all the game’s files even finish downloading on their devices. This feature is much like the one found on many PS5 games, which offer quick-play access: essential assets download first so players can get into the game ASAP while everything else continues to download in the background.

If this feature reminds you of Android’s Instant Apps, you’re right. But the difference is that Instant Apps is mainly focused on smaller-sized apps. On the other hand, game apps are among the largest apps you will find on Google’s PlayStore. So, Play as you Download will significantly reduce the waiting time needed to get into a new game.

An example of the same is elicited in the GIF below. As per Google, the difference is quite noticeable as Play as you Download makes games ready to open at least “2-times faster.”

The feature will work with games that use the Play Asset Delivery system. If they do, developers will not need to do anything to turn the new feature on.

Google also unveiled a new game dashboard for Android 12 that will give you easy access to utilities like screen capture and recording. The dashboard will be available on “select devices” later this year, which most likely means current Pixel devices and the upcoming Pixel 6.

Android 12 will likely begin rolling out in either September or October this year based on past releases.
