Another Day, Another Controversy for Ubisoft

So you feel 2020 has perhaps treated you too brutally? Contemplate again, you might have missed out on the tragedies Ubisoft encountered this year.

You, also, surely would have had nights when you wonder where it all went wrong in your life. Everything was under control.

And now, it’s all going downhill. Luckily, you’re not alone, the French video game company is in the same shoes as you are.

Earlier this year, various allegations of sexist maltreatment, harassment and toxic work culture were made against Ubisoft.

This lead to chief creative officer Serge Hascoët and Tommy Francois, vice president of editorial, both resigning.

Now another black cloud has surrounded Ubisoft for using the “raised fist” symbol in their mobile game, Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad. The clenched fist was used in the RPG to represent the lawbreaking crime group known as Umbra.

For those unaware of the broader picture that “raised fist” presents, it stands for unity, vigour and resistance.

It demonstrates that the rebel inside us all will no longer tolerate injustice.

Currently, the raised fist symbol is associated with the Black Lives Matter movement.

The “Power Fist” being connected to an insidious organization is an unmistakable assault on the Black Lives Matter movement along with other present and recorded battles for Black freedom.

With Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad being heavily excoriated, Ubisoft took to Twitter and gave a statement which said:

“Imagery that appeared in the opening video sequence of Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad featured a ‘raised fist’ was insensitive and harmful in both its inclusion and how it was portrayed.

We have listened to and appreciate the players and the broader community who have pointed it out and we apologize. It will be removed in our next title update this Tuesday, September 1 on Android, and as soon as we’re able to on iOS.”

For a company which always clarified that their games are “apolitical”, it is a no-brainer to know the unrest a constitutional game can cause.
