Odin’s Character Design Was the Hardest, Says God Of War Art Director

Pre-orders for God of War: Ragnarok went live today. The sequel will introduce several new characters, Thor, Tyr, Angrboda, and more. Out of these, the one character everyone is patiently waiting for is the King of Asgard Himself, Odin.

In an Instagram interactive session, Raf Grassetti, the art director for God of War, admitted that Odin was the hardest character to design.

Grassetti collaborated with Dela Longfish, the lead character concept artist at Santa Monica Studio for God Of War. Odin’s preview clearly shows the character’s complex art.

His character is, of course, one-eyed, dressed traditionally donning vintage headgear. He is seen holding the legendary spear, Gungnir, which never misses its target once thrown. Odin’s carrier, the eight-legged steed Sleipnir, is also depicted alongside.

Some speculation is that Odin’s size and build will be massive. Grassetti said that Jormungandr had the most intricate character design, given the detailing and colossal physique. Fans are guessing the same can be expected for Odin.

The first God of War mentions Odin many times, sometimes by other characters or by showing his ravens on-screen. The developers have created a mental image for Odin in players’ minds through these teases, similar to Tyr in the final mural or Thor featuring in a vision. However, Odin is depicted in several murals in-game.

God of War: Ragnarok will be released on 9 November 2022.
