Assassin’s Creed Infinity Will tell Modern-Day Story, Ditches Modern-Day Protagonists

Assassin’s Creed games take us to the stories of iconic protagonists like Altair, Ezio, Kassandra, and Eivor. But there always has been a modern-day character that ties with the historical protagonists too that is linked to the meta events through Animus and Abstergo.

As long-time fans might remember, Desmond Miles was the modern-day protagonist until Assassin’s Creed 3 as he continued the fight against Templars. Layla Hassan has been the focal point of the modern-day narrative as of late, but fans were wondering if there will be a new modern-day character in any of the upcoming games.

However, Ubisoft is entirely changing this meta and modern-day approach. The upcoming installment, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, won’t have any playable present-day segments.

Moreover, the Vice president and executive producer of Assassin’s Creed, Marc-Alexis Côté, explained in a press conference that the upcoming hub platform for the series will be the new home of the Assassin’s Creed meta storyline.

I wanted [Infinity] to perfectly be a good entry point [to the series],” he said. “And that’s where extracting the meta-story from our games and making it live at the platform level is an important change for the franchise.

Côté

According to Côté, the modern-day storylines will be moving to the hub of Assassin’s Creed Infinity, as Assassin’s Creed Infinity acts as a platform/launcher hub for the upcoming titles in the franchise.

He states that the player will take on the role of the protagonist in the modern-day story, as through Assassin’s Creed Infinity’s hub, they will have access to their own Animus.

The way we tell the story will evolve with time,

But the abstraction that we want people to have is [Infinity] is your Animus. It is your DNA Explorer on your desktop. You are the main story character.

Côté

This means that fans may be saying goodbye to the playable segments of the modern-day storylines, and characters like Desmond or Layla won’t be appearing again. Côté even implied this may be the case for the future of Assassin’s Creed, as he states people won’t need to know “who Desmond and Layla are.”

It seems that this is designed to make entering the franchise easier for new players, as they will just be able to hop into a historical story without sitting through a few minutes of exposition on how their character got there.
