Assassin’s Creed Mirage was revealed this weekend to be the next installment in Ubisoft’s famous Creed series. The game has hyped many long-time fans as it is cited to be returning to the original stealth approach the games used to have before the RPG era of Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla.
However, the game was recently tagged 18+ Adults Only by the ESRB, citing “Intense Violence, Blood and Gore, Sexual Themes, Partial Nudity, Real Gambling.” Xbox’s UK store also listed “Real gambling” and “extreme violence” alongside its PEGI 18 rating, which understandably had many fans concerned.
In response to that, Ubisoft has publicly denied that the Upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Mirage will feature “loot boxes” and “real gambling.” According to them, the game is still to be verified by ESRB and will not contain form of gambling or loot boxes.
Very few games are tagged Adults Only, making physical retailers hesitant to sell these games. While usually associated with extreme violence or graphic sexual content, it also covers games that contain “real gambling.” This term implies that Assassin’s Creed: Mirage players would be spending their real money on in-game games of chance.
Gambling often happens in the form of loot boxes, something that fans diligently hate in any sort of game. Thankfully, Xbox has since rectified the mistake. Microsoft’s store page now labels Assassin’s Creed: Mirage as “Likely Mature” with a generic warning that it may not be appropriate for children.
On the other hand, Xbox’s UK storefront still displays a PEGI 18 rating but no longer lists gambling as one of the reasons. The official response by the Ubisoft representative was-
“Following the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Mirage during Ubisoft Forward, some store pages mistakenly displayed the game for preorders with an Adults Only ESRB rating.” While Assassin’s Creed Mirage is still pending rating, Ubisoft wants to reassure players that no real gambling or loot boxes are present in the game.”
Assassin’s Creed Mirage was revealed along with several other upcoming Creed games at Ubisoft Forward. Fans, in general, have been delighted with the game returning to the roots and basics of the Assassin’s Creed series, which will launch sometime in 2023.
