ASUS Reveals Concept RTX 4070 Megalodon GPU Without Power Connectors

ASUS has now revealed a concept RTX 40 series graphics card that does not require power connectors. This was spotted by wccftech during their ASUS HQ tour. The graphics card is still in the concept phase, but design details have been revealed, which makes it stand out among other RTX 40 series GPUs.

The GeForce RTX 4070 Megalodon GPU is the first Ada GPU to not require any power connectors. Instead, it has a hidden PCI slot that carries the GPU’s power, eliminating the need for an external cable. It’s a concept card, so it doesn’t fall under any existing lineups.

In addition to the PCIe Gen 4.0 slot, another slot is connected to the PCB through which power will be supplied, and there are no physical connectors on the PCB. ASUS said that the slot is proprietary and will require specific motherboards that have special connectors to power it.

The connectors will be able to deliver up to to 600 watts of power. It’s worth noting that only one GPU and one motherboard use this concept as of now, so it isn’t generalized in the slightest. ASUS also claimed that the Megalodon name is not the final branding of the GPU, so it’s likely a placeholder name.

Other than that, ASUS also showcased a Z790 TUF Gaming ATX motherboard, which has no power connectors in the front and has them in the back. It sports three 8-pin connectors and one 12VHPWR connector. Through the proprietary slot, these connectors deliver power to the GPU.

The connector does not have an official name and is simply labeled “GC_HPWR”. ASUS has also confirmed that both of these are planned to be released later this year globally, but an official release date is yet to be announced.

It’s too early to estimate a price for both the graphics card and the motherboard, but ASUS did confirm that they’ll be priced a bit higher than normal SKUs because of higher manufacturing costs as the connectors on the PCB have to be moved and realigned. A more efficient cable management system at the cost of a higher price doesn’t sound like a bad deal after all.
