No Battle Royale or Single-Player Campaign for Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 5 was a fun shooter, but it lacked something that made Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4 feel amazing. And everything else on offer didn’t exactly help to change this critique. The single-player campaign was average, and the Battle Royale mode, Firestorm, released far too late and wasn’t that great.

But, like any good creator, DICE seems to be learning from its mistakes. The studio will be focusing all its efforts on what matters with Battlefield 2042: the core multiplayer modes. The new Battlefield game is not going to be getting a single-player campaign at all this time. Dice will be opting for an evolving storyline that takes place over live-game patches and in-game teases, much like Fortnite.

Players take control of a non-patriated soldier – a soldier who belongs to no side. The game is set in the future, hence the name 2042, where the economy has collapsed, sea levels have risen, and the world is on the brink of a catastrophe. The US and Russia are engaged in a war, and the player gets to choose a side in the war for the future of other no-pats. Players will have to contend with natural disasters within the game, making bullets the least dangerous things to avoid.

The game will ship with three main modes: All Out War, featuring Conquest and Breakthrough, which are Battlefield classics; Hazard Zone, a new squad-based game type; and an unannounced mode which DICE LA is currently developing. The final one is being built to appeal to long-time Battlefield fans.

According to the developer, there is no Battle Royale mode planned for this new Battlefield. The game is definitely taking lessons from other games in the genre, with its story being driven by episodic releases and the Battle Pass system, but it seems that DICE will be sticking to what it knows to do best: full-scale warfare across land, air, and sea.

About Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 2042 is the seventeenth installment in the Battlefield series developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. The game is a first-person online multiplayer shooting title. This installment of Battlefield will not feature a single-player campaign mode.

The year is 2042 and the world is in ruins. Natural disasters run rampant, ocean levels have risen, the world economy has collapsed, and the US and Russia are at war. You step into the shoes of a non-patriated soldier – a soldier without a side. The games’ story will be revealed through episodic additions, allowing players to create a future for themselves and other non-pats in a world on the brink of destruction.
