Launch Maps for Battlefield 2042 Finally Revealed!

EA’s Play Live presentation isn’t far off, and fans will get more details about the upcoming Battlefield 2042, but EA has decided to share some information early. These new details are about the game’s maps, how they will function, and how many of them will be available at launch.

Fans will not be happy with this latest piece of info as the game will initially have only seven maps. But, they are impressively large, especially on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.

It has already been reported that this will be the biggest Battlefield in the series in terms of scale, as the maps are going to accommodate 128 players. This Battlefield will be the first to not include a single-player mode, and there will be no battle royale mode either.

The official website also lists all the seven maps and gives us a brief description and an image for each. Their names are,

  • Orbital (Kourou, French Guiana)
  • Hourglass (Doha, Qatar)
  • Kaleidoscope (Songdo, South Korea)
  • Manifest (Brani Island, Singapore)
  • Discarded (Alang, India)
  • Breakaway (Queen Maud Land, Antarctica)
  • Renewal (Eastern Desert, Egypt)

It goes without saying that EA and DICE have plans to add more maps post-launch. It has even been confirmed that some classic maps from the previous Battlefield games would be included as part of an upcoming game mode. We can expect more specifics about this later this month during the EA Live Play stream.

The publisher also explained how the maps would work.

To optimize such large-scale maps, two major changes have been implemented to the Conquest mode, called Clustering and Sectors. Clustering will create deliberate areas of action for players to engage with while Sectors change how players will gain control of an area. To capture a Sector, teams will have to seize and maintain control of every flag inside it.

Also, despite the maps being huge, certain areas will not be accessible depending on the game mode. So, areas available in Conquest mode will be locked off during Breakdown mode and vice versa. EA has said this is one of the advantages of having large playgrounds, as it allows both modes to feel unique.

While players will be able to enter skyscrapers, not every level is going to be accessible. The skirmishes in skyscrapers will be restricted to the lobby and rooftop, as including every level would basically make every skyscraper a map in itself.

EA has also ensured that there will be no content discrepancies between the different console generations. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players will have access to the same weapons, vehicles, and features as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. But, the previous-gen consoles will be limited to 64 player battles, and crossplay will be limited.

About Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 2042 is the seventeenth installment in the Battlefield series developed by DICE and published by Electronic Arts. The game is a first-person online multiplayer shooting title. This installment of Battlefield will not feature a single-player campaign mode.

The year is 2042 and the world is in ruins. Natural disasters run rampant, ocean levels have risen, the world economy has collapsed, and the US and Russia are at war. You step into the shoes of a non-patriated soldier – a soldier without a side. The games’ story will be revealed through episodic additions, allowing players to create a future for themselves and other non-pats in a world on the brink of destruction.
