Portal will allow FPS enthusiasts to fit ammunition from any time in history in a map of their choosing. Always wanted to see World War 2-era Hornets take on F/A-18 Super Hornet jets? You got it.

Always wondered how the giant, old-school tanks will hold up against Explosive Ordnance Disposal robots? Now, you can find out. The possibilities are endless, thus making Portal the Battlefield franchise’s most ambitious multiplayer to date.

This will be made possible by a web-based interface called Battlefield Builder that will let players create matches from the ground up.

Rules, map mixing, armies, weapons, gadgets, vehicles, objectives, and team sizes, that too from various Battlefield games, can be tailored by players to fit their needs.

What’s more, this feature will be open to anyone who has an EA account. A copy of Battlefield 2042 will not be mandatory to craft a custom map to share with your friends.

Along with the maps for Battlefield 2042, Portal will include six maps from the previously mentioned Battlefield titles:

  • Battle of the Bulge (Battlefield 1942)
  • El Alamein (Battlefield 1942)
  • Arica Harbor (Bad Company 2)
  • Valparaiso (Bad Company 2)
  • Caspian Border (Battlefield 3)
  • Noshahr Canals (Battlefield 3)

These maps have been rebuilt for the latest version of EA’s Frostbite engine to run at 4K 60fps.

Furthermore, they are also updated to accommodate Battlefield 2042’s larger player counts, i.e., 128 players, on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S. Previous-gen consoles will be able to support a max of 64 players.

Portal will also allow you to create ‘Experiences’ for other players to join where you can run custom games or use preset modes, such as Conquest, Team Deathmatch, Rush, which will be available at launch.

You will also be able to follow other player Experiences if you like them and join their matches whenever you wish.

Developer Ripple Effect calls Portal a “love letter” to Battlefield fans and describes it as a community-driven experience where the fans will have the power to create, build, and share the most amazing Battlefield games in the world.

Portal will also come equipped with 2042’s cross-play, so you can access these games irrespective of your platform.

It might be a little early to say this, but Portal should undoubtedly make up for the lack of a single-player and campaign in Battlefield 2042.

The games’ story will be revealed through episodic additions, allowing players to create a future for themselves and other non-pats in a world on the brink of destruction.
