PC Players Rejoice! Bethesda’s Starfield to Feature Full Mod Support

More excuse to jump back into the world of Tamriel! However, those waiting for Bethesda to finally stop milking the Skyrim cow and move on have other reasons to be happy.

Now, players who want a new Bethesda title will have to wait a while for Starfield, specifically November 2022. The developer hasn’t shown off any new footage since E3 this year and is not ready to release any gameplay footage either. Given that this is the first original IP from Bethesda in the last 25 years, fans are foaming at the mouth to know more.

Luckily Todd Howard, Game Director and Executive Producer at Bethesda Game Studios has provided the answer to a burning question, revealing that Starfield will launch with full mod support.

This information was revealed during a Reddit AMA. Most Bethesda fans won’t be surprised with this news, as both Skyrim and Fallout 4 have official mod support. Skyrim, in particular, is famous for its ever-growing list of mods, even now a decade after its release. Almost three billion mods for the game have been downloaded from Nexus Mods, the most popular mod-sharing website.

Fallout 4’s is quite evidently not as old but is still one of the significant reasons people continue to play the game even now.

But it’s good to know that Bethesda will continue to support mods in Starfield officially, a decision that will get a lot more people interested in the game.

The AMA went on to reveal some other minor details about the upcoming IP. One commenter inquired if Starfield would feature any form of robot companion, to which Howards replied with a cryptic, “Yes, kind of.”

He also revealed that the game’s character creator would allow players to choose their preferred pronouns, an excellent step for inclusivity. The game will feature recorded dialogue reflecting if the character is a he, she, or they.

Sadly, it was just small tidbits like these that were revealed in the AMA. This is compounded with the fact that we most likely won’t see much of Starfield until E3 2022. As of now, fans only know that Howard has described the game as “Skyrim in space.” Players will be allowed to experience the game in either first or third person.

There will also be multiple joinable factions in addition to the main storyline. As of now, the known factions are Constellation, the main focus of the plot, the United Colonies, and the Freestar Collective. Howard’s comments suggest that the main plot will be separate from the main storyline, a departure from how Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4 handled their narratives.

Starfield uses Bethesda’s new Creation Engine 2, an upgraded version of the software used in Fallout 4, Skyrim, and Fallout 76. There is no precise information about how the upgraded engine compares to the previous version, but it should allow Starfield to take full advantage of modern hardware and advancements.

We can expect to get more information on the title as we get closer to Starfield’s release date.
