Reports Reveal Call of Duty 2023 will not Continue Black Ops Subseries

Call of Duty has seen its share of developers, namely Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games, and Infinity Ward, who developed the Modern Warfare subseries, beginning with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This title became so popular that it was rebooted in 2019 with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Its sequel went on to become the best-selling game of 2022 in the US.

According to recent reports, Call of Duty 2023 will be a continuation of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, released last year. The Call of Duty series usually has alternating developers and storylines and releases every year in fall.

Since last year’s Call of Duty game was a part of the Modern Warfare subseries, many expected this year’s installment to follow up on the Black Ops subseries by Treyarch or maybe another title from Sledgehammer Games.

Just a year ago, it was reported that Call of Duty 2023 would be delayed. The recent report also confirms this detail and explains that the delayed title was developed by Treyarch, and Sledgehammer Games would be stepping in for 2023.

Sledgehammer Games’ latest entry was originally meant to be a “premium expansion” to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but then evolved into a full-fledged game with single-player and multiplayer modes.

This was enough to send the developers team into a frenzy since they had a lot to work with on a tight schedule. The situation is somewhat similar to the case of Call of Duty: Vanguard. The game ended performing below expectations and received mixed to negative reviews from the community.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Black Ops are two of the highest-selling titles in the franchise. Their stats compared to that of Call of Duty: Vanguard makes it evident that Infinity Ward should prioritize more on what sells best.

Most likely, Call of Duty will not get an experimental one-off title for a while but that just means current games will continue to receive long-term support. Call of Duty fans can be rest assured that there will be plenty of quality content in the future.
