Can You Become a Dark Witch/Wizard in Hogwarts Legacy?

If you’ve read all the Harry Potter novels and watched all the movies in the franchise, I’m sure you know that Dark Magic plays an important role in the storylines. And it isn’t uncommon to wonder whether this magic exists in the Hogwarts Legacy World or not.

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from Hogwarts Legacy.

So, the question on everyone’s minds is: can you become an Evil Witch/Wizard in Hogwarts Legacy?

Your character can go evil in Hogwarts Legacy. You wouldn’t canonically be considered a Dark Witch/Wizard but you could learn to use some Unforgivable Curses and choose the morally questionable paths during the game.

Although, whatever decisions you make and quests you complete, the end result of the game is basically the same for everyone because you cannot be an antagonist and your mission is to save Hogwarts.

That being said, let’s dive into which aspects of the game you could use to make your character an evil one.

Unforgivable Curses

In the Harry Potter Universe, there are three Unforgivable Curses that are forbidden by the Ministry of Magic. In Hogwarts Legacy, you can learn to use these three spells through side quests, but they come with certain limitations.

What’s unique about these quests is that they will require you to befriend a Slytherin pupil named Sebastian Sallow, for whom you will be completing said side quests.

You will have to reach a level much higher than the level of the final quest of the main story, before you unlock the Unforgivable Curses. It is easy to miss the side quests so make sure to keep a look out for Sebastian.

Here are the three Unforgivable Curses:

I. Crucio Spell

Crucio is a spell you can use to torment your victim. It can be unlocked after completing the ‘In the Shadow of the Study’ Quest.

II. Imperio Spell

Imperio is a spell you can use to manipulate your victim. It can be unlocked after completing the ‘In the Shadow of Time’ Quest.

III. Avada Kedavra Spell

The famous Avada Kedavra is a Killing Curse and the strongest of all the Unforgivable Curses. This spell can be unlocked after completing the ‘In the Shadow of the Relic’ Quest.

The above spells can only be used against enemy combatants. This means that your fellow students and faculty members are off-limits. The game will also only allow you to use the curses to a certain extent that wouldn’t lead to very harsh consequences.

Side note: You can try using the Alohomora spell for stealing.

Wardrobe and Dialogue

You can dress your character to be more evil-looking by choosing the appropriate hair, scars, dark robes, and accessories. You can also customize your broomsticks and wands to look spookier. Essentially, you could choose a wardrobe that you think would make your character appear evil.

The quests in Hogwarts Legacy allow you to choose from multiple dialogue options while conversing with other characters. Selecting the morally questionable responses can let you create an unfriendly protagonist. This can also negatively affect your relationships with other students.

Overall, you can use both these features to create an evil persona for your witch/wizard.

Morality System of Hogwarts Legacy

In an answer to an FAQ, Hogwarts Legacy confirmed that it “does not have a morality system, but players will encounter various quests and storylines that will influence the witch or wizard they choose to become”.

Therefore, you won’t be punished for using the Unforgivable Curses or any other mischievous acts.

This also means that you won’t ever be able to reach a Voldemort-level of evil or be recognized as an actual Dark Witch/Wizard.

Effect of Evil Choices on Gameplay

The choices you make in the quests along the way will define the kind of protagonist or wizard you become by the end of the game.

Going with the morally questionable choices or “evil” ones will definitely give you a more evil ending as opposed to choosing the “right decisions”. Even still, the ending of Hogwarts Legacy remains basically the same for everyone and the only way to progress through the game is to protect Hogwarts at all costs.

Now, if Warner Bros. were to release a second part to Hogwarts Legacy, the type of wizard you created for yourself in this part might have some effects on the future storylines. However, these are only speculations so we can’t confirm anything yet.

Until then, I hope you have fun getting a taste of what it feels like to be a villain!
