Can the mongrels and other wild beasts be tamed in Hogwarts Legacy?

Hogwarts Legacy is the dream manifestation of all Harry Potter lovers. Incorporating elements from the books, movies and some brand-new ideas, Hogwarts Legacy is perfect for spending hours of your life, each moment exciting and joyful.

Crucial elements of the wizarding school are the fantastic beasts and magical creatures that inhabit the Forbidden Forest and are taught about in the Care of Magical Creatures class. As expected, they are a significant part of the Hogwarts Legacy experience.

I was very excited to realize that though these animals couldn’t be kept as pets, they could be nurtured and cared for in specific places. That was close enough to a pet for me in the magical world. However, I realized that not all animals can be kept in our care; disappointingly, I could not keep an owl and many other animals.

I definitely needed a guide to beast-keeping in the wizarding world. And you have come to the perfect place for the same! Read on!

Not all wild beasts in Hogwarts Legacy can be tamed. Only beasts, like Hippogriffs, unicorns, Puffskein, Nifflers etc., that can be found in Beast Dens can be tamed. Mongrels, dragons, and other beasts that are not found there cannot be tamed.

1. Can you have pets in Hogwarts Legacy?

A character cannot have pets in Hogwarts Legacy. However, some wild beasts can be rescued, tamed, and cared for, just like pets, in the game.

The wild beasts are tamed and nurtured in a Vivarium that needs to be unlocked before the rescue of the beasts. The Vivarium can be decorated using Conjurations, and we can brush and feed the beasts. We can also play with them using toys. These actions of care are how they are tamed.

We can also christen the beasts; this is just an added feature that enhances our experiences but has no more benefits in the game.

2. Which beasts cannot be tamed in Hogwarts Legacy?

In Hogwarts Legacy, some wild beasts are untamable and can only be fought. These beasts are not found in Beast Dens. They are:

  • Mongrels
  • Dragons
  • Trolls
  • Acromantula
  • Centaurs
  • Horklumps

These dangerous beasts must be defeated using powerful magic and wit. Mongrels are wolf-like creatures that are found in Mongrel Lairs. Their fur is useful in potions that give advantages to the characters, like the Edurus Potion.

Fighting against the dragons gives us a taste of the Triwizard Tournament, while Firenze cannot be kept in mind while battling the powerful centaurs. Aragog is long gone; the Acromantula are more dangerous, and we are familiar with the trolls from Harry’s first year at Hogwarts. “There are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.” Remember?

There are other beasts in Hogwarts Legacy that sometimes need to be battled against but can be captured and tamed. Read on to learn about them!

3. Which beasts can be tamed in Hogwarts Legacy?

In Hogwarts Legacy, some wild beasts can be captured and kept in Rivariums. There are 13 such wild beasts and they are found in Beast Dens. They are:

  • Diricawl
  • Fwooper
  • Giant Purple Toad
  • Graphorn
  • Hippogriff (yup!)
  • Jobberknoll
  • Kneazle
  • Mooncalf
  • Niffler (yup! yup! yup!)
  • Phoenix (yupp again!!)
  • Puffskein
  • Thestral
  • Unicorn

Thestrals are mysterious and beautiful creatures to me from the Harry Potter books, and Hogwarts Legacy gives us a chance to care for them. And also, to feel like Newt with Nifflers! Hippogriffs have always been a dream, and phoenixes even more! Mooncalves are one of the cutest creatures alive, and even Puffskeins, Jobberknolls are very peaceful and silent creatures until their death.

Some of these creatures are also dangerous, like the Giant Purple Toad and the Graphorn. However, on successfully capturing them, they can be tamed and flourish under care.

4. How to rescue wild beasts?

In Hogwarts Legacy, the wild beasts can be rescued from the Beast Dens using a Nab-Sack. The character must sneak toward the beast, and the Nab-Sack is used to catch them. They must then be placed in the Vivarium.

The Beast Dens can be identified on the map by the Bear Claw icon. It is located in the overworld.

When trying to rescue a beast using the Nab-Sack, a yellow meter will appear on the screen, which indicates when we must take the last step to capture it. The complete fill-up of the meter shows the best time to click the button to capture it successfully.

If you have chosen the Story Difficulty mode for the game, then the yellow meter will not show up, and an attempt to capture the beast is made right away when you click. It is up to you to determine the best position to capture the beast!

5. How to unlock the Nab-Sack and the Rivarium?

The Nab-Sack spell and Rivarium can be unlocked in The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom quest. The Room of Requirement quest must be completed before that, as the other quest is located in the Room of Requirement.

The Room of Requirement quest must be completed initially to discover the Room of Requirement (Yes! You can really be in The Room of Requirement!). The Nab-Sack spell and the Rivarium are unlocked in The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom quest.

The first Rivarium that can be unlocked will be located in the Room of Requirement. Thus, it can be decorated using Conjurations that require spending of Moonstones. Do not worry; the spending has benefits. Read on to find more!

Conjurations that help buy Utility Items for better care of the rescued beasts are also later unlocked. These reduce the work required to take care of them efficiently and make our job easier.

6. How to take care of the beasts in your Rivarium?

The beasts in a Rivarium can be taken care of through frequent interactions with them. Icons indicating the needs of the beasts, like caring, grooming, and feeding, are present. These icons turn green on the fulfillment of these needs.

A Heart icon indicates the need for caring and grooming, while a Hunger Icon shows the beast’s need for food. Until these needs are met, the icons remain grey in color and turn green on meeting these needs.

The beasts can be played with and interacted with using toys and Utility Items like Beast Feeder and Beast Toybox. Could you have imagined yourself ever doing that? Playing with them builds our relationship with them, tames them, and provides a fun recreational activity between hardcore quests and studying.

Beasts can even be bred in a Rivarium using the Breeding Pen, which lets us produce offspring and increase our collection of animals (wow!).

7. Why should we tame and take care of beasts in Hogwarts Legacy?

Proper taming and taking care of beasts are essential in Hogwarts Legacy as they provide upgrade materials for the character’s Gear. This increases our level of skills and expertise in the game.

The wild beasts in our Rivariums are a source of upgradations for our Gear that helps us during various quests and adventures. With the unlocking of several Conjurations and Utility Items, nurturing the beast becomes easy, and so does acquiring the rewards of doing so.

These beasts produce resources that otherwise need to be bought from Brood and Peck in Hogsmeade (Why spend your precious Galleons?). Magical beasts can also be sold to Brood and Peck for golden Galleons.

So, ensure you have completed the two main quests and unlocked the Nab-Sack spell and Rivarium to tame and care for wild beasts. This is a golden opportunity, indeed!

8. About Hogwarts Legacy

Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world RPG from Avalanche Studio. The game places the player in the wizarding school of Hogwarts, allowing them to witness the iconic locations as a character other than Harry Potter.

The game has an expansive map that makes the game very immersive, even for people who are yet to read the books or watched the movie.

The mysterious, gripping storyline, with the vast areas to explored, either on foot or broomstick, makes it even more real life.
