CD Projekt Debunks Alleged Developer’s Post on Cyberpunk 2077’s Cut Content

CD projekt has debunked a post by an alleged developer which made big claims about cut content and an overhaul of the game.

The Polish video game developer has officially denied the statements made by an alleged Cyberpunk 2077 developer who claimed that, among other things, the game is set for a massive overhaul sometime in June.

CD Projekt Red denied the statements made by an alleged Cyberpunk 2077 developer via a tweet from the official Twitter handle about the alleged upcoming ‘June update.’

The developer had claimed that the game is set to receive a massive overhaul in June 2021. He further claimed that a significant part of the game’s code has already been rewritten and large portions of the “Cut Content” will return.

The alleged developer’s statements were:

“ You’d be amazed by how much is already done. That ‘cut content’ so people finish the main quest’ talk was all bulls***.”

He further said, “Most apartments with ‘Closed(locked)’ indications used to be lootable, we’ve scrapped 50,000+ lines of dialogue and I believe the June update will bring a whole lot of cut content back into the game.”

These unverified claims caused waves of theories and speculation as earlier statements by senior-level designer Miles Tost, gave a sense of legitimacy to these claims.

In an interview in October 2020, Miles stated, “Cutting features and scope is a very normal part of development.” He further talked about how the developers iterate and change stuff as they have certain ideas that sound good on paper but don’t work out well in the game with all the other features.

Tost also said,

“ I understand this is disappointing for everyone when it happens and also difficult to understand without all the context of the development environment, but in this case, I just kindly ask you for your trust.”

The post appeared on GameFAQs a few weeks ago, but gained widespread attention after being reposted on Reddit and received more than 1700 comments.

On 6th January, CD Projekt took the matter into their own hands and released an official statement via Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter handle.

CD Projekt declared all these statements as a made-up story which was not true. They, however, did not refute any particular claim made in the post including the criticism of Keanu Reeves’s role of Johnny Silverhand.

The official statement from the developer can be seen as an act of prevention from any possible legal action. Moreover, the fact that CD projekt felt compelled to respond to the rumor at all shows that the studio is being very careful with what they say due to the bungled launch of the game.

About Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a 2020 action role-playing video game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt, based on video game designer Mike Pondsmith’s game series.

Set in a dystopian cyberpunk universe, the player assumes the role of “V,” a mercenary in the fictional Californian city known as “Night City,” where they deal with the fallout from a heist gone wrong that results in an experimental cybernetic “bio-chip” containing an engram of the legendary rock star and terrorist Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves) threatening to slowly overwrite V’s mind; as the story progresses V and Johnny must work together to find a way to be separated and save V’s life.
