CD Projekt Exerting DMCA Takedowns to Prevent the Stolen Code’s Spread
The hackers really must hate CDPR.

After the hackers invaded CDPR’s data, they demanded a whopping amount of money. If not, a threat to leak the company’s game’s source code was given. The Polish developers did not give in to the demands of hackers.

The studio commented,

“We will not give in to the demands nor negotiate with the actor, being aware that this may eventually lead to the release of the compromised data.”

they added,

“We are taking necessary steps to mitigate the consequences of such a release, in particular by approaching any parties that may be affected due to the breach.”

Instead, CDPR opted for DMCA Takedowns to repress the spread of their hacked data after the hackers released the source code for Gwent. Vice revealed that Projekt Red apprised two Twitter users about the takedown last week through a copyright monitoring firm.

These users received an email that read:

“Description of infringement: Illegally obtained source code of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. Posted without authorisation, not intended to be released to the public.”

It is claimed that the source code of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game has been successfully sold through an underground Russian forum. Reports say that the auction commenced with an opening bid of $1 million along with a buy-it-now price of $7 million.

The detailed note that the hackers left said that the source code for games like Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3, Gwent, and a Witcher 3’s unreleased version was hacked.

Moreover, other important documents related to accounting, administration, legal, HR, investor relations have also been stolen. Although, the studio reassured that the hackers obtained “certain data belonging to CD PROJEKT capital group.”

As of now, CDPR has not said a word on the issue officially. However, expect them to do in the coming hours or days.
