Craft Incredibly Realistic Faces Using Just Your Browser!

The Metahuman Creator, a browser-based software tool powered by Unreal Engine and created by Epic Games, can create highly realistic human faces and help recreate more realistic body movements and facial animations.

Epic gave us a quick look at some examples of creations built using the Metahuman Creator, and the term “Metahuman” seems to be what the company is branding these virtually created personas.

The company has also stated that the Metahumans can be used in conjunction with modern motion capture and animation techniques. It can be used to create lifelike movements and human interaction scenes for video games, film, TV and various other formats.

Epic states that these incredibly detailed humans can be generated in a matter of mere minutes and equipped with unique hairstyles and clothing, and can be further tailored to suit specific needs. These Metahumans can be manipulated in real-time within the tool itself by just using a web browser.

Vladimir Mastilovic, Vice President of Digital Humans Technology at Epic Games said,

“Up until now one of the most arduous tasks in 3D content creation has been constructing truly convincing digital humans. Even the most experienced artists require significant amounts of time, effort, and equipment, just for one character. After decades of research and development, and thanks to bringing companies like 3Lateral, Cubic Motion, and Quixel into the Epic family, that barrier is being erased through Unreal Engine, and we’re thrilled to introduce MetaHuman Creator.”

While the creations may not mimic the photorealism of the AI technique which within projects such as This Person Does Not Exist, Metahuman Creator can be a powerful tool for video game character creation. The movements alone could easily pass for real-life motion capture.

It’s not clear when Epic Games plans to release the Metahuman Creator. All we have to go on is a broad 2021 window. But we’re sure video game devs, third party companies and even just animation enthusiasts are going to be waiting with bated breath for this tool.
