Cross-progression and Cross-play for Rainbow Six Siege Are in Development: Game Director Halle

The future for Rainbow Six Siege seems just peachy.

In a video conference on February 22, Ubisoft outlined all the core gameplay changes that will be coming to the competitive shooter over the course of this year. Year Six kicks off with Season 1 named Crimson Heist and the introduction of Argentine master thief Flores. Incidentally, Flores also happens to be the game’s first gay character. The company revealed a whole lot more in their almost hour-long panel which is linked for you below.

In more good news, game director Jean-Baptiste Halle also confirmed at the event that cross-progression and cross-play for consoles are under development.

“We’re actively working on cross-progression and crossplay,”

“Within the realm of consoles, I think it would be great if PlayStation and Xbox could play together.”

This is a welcome development as Siege fans have been awaiting this confirmation since Ubisoft switched from Uplay to its very own Ubisoft Connect. When this switch was announced, Ubisoft said that it would bring cross-platform play and cross-saving to all its future releases but neglected to mention any such thing about Rainbow Six.

Halle said that crossplay would ensure shorter matchmaking times, especially in regions where there is a significant disparity in the types of consoles used. Asian regions, for instance, have many more players on PlayStation than on XBox. As far as PC is considered, Halle expressed skepticism.

“I can see the pros, but I can also see the cons,”

Jean-Baptiste Halle

“So, for this one, it’s too early for us to communicate.”

It is well-known that Siege is more of a challenge on PC as compared to consoles. With no aim assist, higher recoil and more seasoned players, the game can definitely put gamers through the ringer. Hopefully, this imbalance will not deter Ubisoft from bringing cross-play to PC because it sure seems like the field could use some evening up.
