Update 1.5 Bumps Up Minimum System Requirements of Cyberpunk 2077

The much-awaited next-gen update finally dropped yesterday for Cyberpunk 2077. Patch 1.5 allows the latest CD Projekt Red title to run at 4K resolution with 60fps framerate, along with ray-traced shadows and many other visual tweaks. While this is excellent news for those wanting Cyberpunk 2077 to be even prettier than it is, it has also bumped up the minimum system requirements.

These tweaks were included for the PC as well, and the more graphically impressive game will need a higher tier of hardware to run. The patch 1.5 notes reveal that NVIDIA’s GTX 700-series will no longer be enough to run the game as minimum hardware.

Due to the end of support for graphics drivers, we’ve decided to change the minimum system requirements of NVIDIA graphics cards to GTX 970. The game won’t necessarily stop functioning on said cards, however, we are no longer testing the game on NVIDIA 700 Series graphics cards.

Support from NVIDIA for the older 700-series cards stopped back in 2021, and it wouldn’t make sense for CD Projekt Red to spend time testing and optimizing the game for such older hardware. This is amplified by the fact that very few people use these cards anymore.

The studio has announced that Cyberpunk 2077 will also stop support for Windows 7 by June “due to technical limitations of non-native DirectX 12 implementation on Windows 7, and the end of, or limited, support for graphics drivers.” Future updates may well stop the game from working on a Windows 7 system post-June.

Unless you’re running an NVIDIA 760 on Windows 7, these developments should not affect you in any way. The new minimum system requirements for Cyberpunk 2077 have been updated on Steam to read,

  • OS: Windows 10
  • Processor: Intel Core i5-3570K or AMD FX-8310
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon RX 470
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Storage: 70 GB available space

Aside from overhauling the visuals, patch 1.5 added a long list of fixes and improvements, along with new DLC and optimizations. People are saying this is the update that will ensure that Cyberpunk 2077 is a complete experience, but that remains to be seen.

About Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a 2020 action role-playing video game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt, based on video game designer Mike Pondsmith’s game series.

Set in a dystopian cyberpunk universe, the player assumes the role of “V,” a mercenary in the fictional Californian city known as “Night City,” where they deal with the fallout from a heist gone wrong that results in an experimental cybernetic “bio-chip” containing an engram of the legendary rock star and terrorist Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves) threatening to slowly overwrite V’s mind; as the story progresses V and Johnny must work together to find a way to be separated and save V’s life.
