Cyberpunk 2077: Online or Offline Only Gamemode?

CD Projekt Red has campaigned Cyberpunk 2077 to be an epitome of the single-player experience. Will Cyberpunk 2077 force players to be always online, or would truly offline play be allowed?

Cyberpunk 2077 puts you in control of V, a mercenary making their way through Night City. The name of the game here is customization; you can create your V version, be it male or female.

The gameplay mechanics are all centered around delivering the best single-player experience. Will this be at the cost of an always-online DRM, or is the game more forgiving? Let’s find out.

1. Cyberpunk 2077 Going to Be Always Online?

The game developer, CD Projekt Red has always been hard against Digital Rights Management (DRM) usage in their game. Specifically, DRMs that required you to be always online like big old Denuvo.

Even their past games like the Witcher series were released without any such always-online protection and can be found on GOG games. This trend of not including intrusive online-only DRM is going to continue with Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077 will not be always-online. Players will be able to play the entirety of Cyberpunk 2077 without needing an internet connection. The game does not use any intrusive DRM that forces always-online connectivity.

This is in line with CDPR’s vision, as the developers believe in releasing DRM free versions in the past, too; this time might not be too different.

“We believe that pirates are just misunderstood customers, That’s why we always try to approach gamers from various angles and see what makes them tick. We decided to build our business on trust and a mutual understanding of sorts–you buy our games and we genuinely give a damn about your experience with them.”

2. Will Cyberpunk 2077 be Multiplayer?

The developers have developed Cyberpunk 2077 to be mostly a single-player focused storyline experience, much like the Witcher 3, and will be shipped as such on launch. The future might hold different things, though.

Cyberpunk 2077 is going to be a single-player game on launch. Multiplayer support will come later. On release, Cyberpunk 2077 will be solely focusing on the single-player experience.

“We have multiplayer in R&D, but the game we’re shipping to you, the game you’re going to buy is the single-player experience. That’s really what we’re concentrating on now, the single-player RPG experience. That’s what we want to nail down before we start looking at any of these other things.”

It is clear that Cyberpunk will be first and foremost a single-player game with full offline support, but multiplayer will also be coming in the future. Though I think multiplayer would be more co-op based than full-on massive PvP fights. Still, it is not near the horizon; you can expect it to be added in 2022 or maybe even 2023.

5. About Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a 2020 action role-playing video game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt, based on video game designer Mike Pondsmith’s game series.

Set in a dystopian cyberpunk universe, the player assumes the role of “V,” a mercenary in the fictional Californian city known as “Night City,” where they deal with the fallout from a heist gone wrong that results in an experimental cybernetic “bio-chip” containing an engram of the legendary rock star and terrorist Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves) threatening to slowly overwrite V’s mind; as the story progresses V and Johnny must work together to find a way to be separated and save V’s life.
