Cyberpunk 2077 Sales For Consoles Dipped Drastically in January

While Cyberpunk 2077 performs decently on PC, it is an absolute mess on consoles. But as time passes it is becoming more evident how big of a mess the game really is. Almost every month since launch, players have been getting a new reminder of why the game is such a travesty.

So, this was bound to dent the sales of the game at some point. On NPD’s list of best-selling games, the game dropped from Number 2 in December 2020 to Number 18 in January 2021; a steep drop of 16 places. Here’s the full list:

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War
  2. Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
  3. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  4. Madden NFL 21
  5. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  6. Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
  7. Ring Fit Adventure
  8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
  9. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  10. NBA 2K21
  11. Super Mario 3D All-Stars
  12. FIFA 21
  13. Immortals: Fenyx Rising
  14. Mortal Kombat 11
  15. Just Dance 2021
  16. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

As you can see, the game is barely able to perform against years-old releases like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mortal Kombat 11. However, CDPR does not provide digital sales numbers to the NPD group. So, this may not constitute the full picture of how sales of the game are performing. Due to its moderate success on PC, it is possible that the game could be doing much better on Steam. Additionally, it is also important to note that the game still isn’t back on the PS store.

While the game takes a beating on the sales front, things are not very rosy at the corporate front either. CDPR was subject to a vicious ransomware attack earlier this week where hackers got hold of the source codes for the company’s most high-profile games including those of Cyberpunk 2077. To make matters worse, the hackers sold the codes to an unknown buyer on the dark web. At the moment, the identity of neither the hackers nor the buyers is known but local police departments are investigating the situation.

About Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a 2020 action role-playing video game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt, based on video game designer Mike Pondsmith’s game series.

Set in a dystopian cyberpunk universe, the player assumes the role of “V,” a mercenary in the fictional Californian city known as “Night City,” where they deal with the fallout from a heist gone wrong that results in an experimental cybernetic “bio-chip” containing an engram of the legendary rock star and terrorist Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves) threatening to slowly overwrite V’s mind; as the story progresses V and Johnny must work together to find a way to be separated and save V’s life.
