Cyberpunk 2077 Runs at a Stable 30 FPS on PS4, but There are Caveats

Cyberpunk 2077 is finally back for sale at the PS Store after a little over six months of absence. But as far as performance on Sony’s consoles goes, things still aren’t hunky-dory as one would have expected them to be. Even though the game seems to be running at a steady 30 FPS, fans are complaining that the world has been stripped down.

In preparation for its return to Sony’s digital store, CDPR dropped Patch 1.23 for Cyberpunk. But despite the deployment of what was a significant patch, the game relaunched on the PS Store with a warning from PlayStation: avoid playing on the PS4, play on the PS4 Pro or PS5 instead.

The need for this warning is becoming more and more evident by the hour. A video by YouTuber ElAnalistaDeBits demonstrates how Cyberpunk’s performance has improved from when it launched last year and over patches. But Night City, the game’s hyper futuristic city, is now alarmingly barren.

CDPR has boosted performance but has taken many of the city’s pedestrians, cars, and other environmental details as the cost. This significantly brings down Night City’s “personality” and goes against CDPR’s promise of Cyberpunk 2077 being set in a realistic and interactive open world.

Furthermore, the game is also suffering from annoying pop-ups, as spotted by Gautoz on Twitter.

The new-gen consoles haven’t been spared of problems either: players on PS4 Pro and PS5 are also complaining of pop-ins and weird rapturing of NPCs while driving.

Comments regarding the game feeling worse than before on PS4 Pro are already starting to populate Reddit. The fact the game is behaving this way on a console that Sony recommends you play on does not bode well for CDPR.

Guess the only thing to do now is to heed Sony’s warnings and stick to playing Cyberpunk 2077 on new-gen consoles. If you have a base PS4, wait it out till a couple more of the planned updates arrive.

All these hiccups give rise to many questions, with two right at the front of the line: Why release a game that so evidently needed a lot more time to develop? Why sell a game for a platform it runs so poorly on?

It’s doubtful we will get any concrete answers to these questions, but it feels good to know that we will at least get to upgrade Cyberpunk 2077’s PS4 version to PS5 at no extra cost.

About Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a 2020 action role-playing video game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt, based on video game designer Mike Pondsmith’s game series.

Set in a dystopian cyberpunk universe, the player assumes the role of “V,” a mercenary in the fictional Californian city known as “Night City,” where they deal with the fallout from a heist gone wrong that results in an experimental cybernetic “bio-chip” containing an engram of the legendary rock star and terrorist Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves) threatening to slowly overwrite V’s mind; as the story progresses V and Johnny must work together to find a way to be separated and save V’s life.
