The Daytona International Speedway Will Be Coming to Gran Turismo 7

Forza Horizon 5 has been out for a while now and is still making waves. Sony needs to get their act in gear, and we’re hoping that Gran Turismo 7 is the boost they need in the racing department. A long-standing franchise for Sony, Gran Turismo has recurring fans who enjoy some aspects of the game, making a repeat in every subsequent iteration. We now have an official tweet from PlayStation confirming that a fan-favorite track will be included in Gran Turismo 7 at launch.

Gran Turismo 7 will feature 90 tracks at launch, and the addition of the Daytona International Speedway should be a cause for celebration for fans of the series. The news isn’t wholly unexpected, as a thumbnail of the track was first observed on the course selection screen during the initial announcement, but an official confirmation is reassuring.

The first appearance of the Daytona International Speedway was in the 2007 Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, making a comeback in Gran Turismo 5 and again in Gran Turismo 6 in 2013, but was missing in 2017’s Gran Turismo Sport. The track layout in the previous titles was either the usual 2.5-mile tri-oval formation or the road course used for endurance and motorcycle racing.

Looking at the official tweet, the track layout, which some have labeled a “roval,” includes the additional infield turns off of the main larger oval and an additional chicane just shy of the finish line first used by NASCAR in 2020. So, the new iteration of the track will be one not seen in the previous games.

The new track layout is a combo of approximately three-quarters of the 2.5-mile high-banked tri-oval incorporated with a more challenging infield road course portion. The 3.56 mile-long course has dramatically increased the number of turns from four to twelve.

If the course is real-world accurate, drivers should expect a high-speed entrance into the first turn, followed by a left-handed dive off the front straight that would lead into the various twists and turns of the new infield. If Sony is looking at appeasing the hardcore track fanatics, aside from offering the 25th Anniversary edition, they will want to include the International (east) and west Horseshoe turns that lead into the tricky backstretch chicane before ascending the bank in Turn 3.
