The Last Giant, Faye’s Prophecy and Loki’s Real Identity – God of War

With the release of God of War on PC, many gamers may be trying it out for the first time. Sony Studio relaunched the God of War franchise in a new setting and added a secondary character protagonist. God of War 4 pits Kratos and his son Atreus against the gods and mythical beings of Norse mythology.

With the recent announcement of the fifth installment of the game, the end will have a crucial impact on the god of war and his entire family.

At the end of God of War 4, Kratos kills Baldur and goes to Jotunheim with Atreus to scatter Faye’s ashes. When they get there, they discover that Kratos’ wife Faye had been a Frost Giant queen called Laufey. Hence, making Atreus half god and half-giant.

Here in this article, you’ll find the answers to a whole lot of questions the game’s ending raises.

Did all Frost Giants die in God of War 4?

In God of War 4, all the Frost Giants are dead apart from Kratos’ son Atreus. The ending scene will reveal that Faye was a Frost Giant named Laufey, and her son is half Frost Giant.

Bergelmir discovered Jotunheim. He was one of the few Jotnar survivors of Odin’s slaughter of their ancestor, Ymir. Also, Jotunheim was the sanctuary of Frost Giants. A place where they could grow and prosper. Fearing his prophesized downfall at the hands of the Frost Giants, Odin started to kill them all.

Scared of extinction, all the Frost Giants retreated to Jotunheim. In no time, it became the tomb of the Frost Giant race. Afraid of Odin’s wrath, Faye, the last guardian of Jotnar, flew to Midgard. There she created a protective barrier around her home, in a forest. So that Odin and Aesir can’t detect the last remaining Frost Giants, herself, and her son Atreus.

But, Faye dies of unknown causes, leaving behind Atreus as the last survivor of the Frost Giant race.

How did Faye know about Atreus’ and Kratos’ journey?

Atreus and Kratos Journey

In God of War 4, Faye was a Frost Giant, and hence, she was able to see the future. She foresaw Atreus’ and Kratos’ journey with the help of precognition. In a way, she made sure it came true.

Faye was aware of her incoming death and marked the trees she wanted Kratos to use for the pyre. Moments before her death, she requested Kratos to cremate her body using the wood from the same trees and spread her ashes on the highest peak of the Nine Realms.

When Kratos cut the marked trees, the barrier spell broke and led to Odin detecting the presence of the last Frost Giant, Atreus, in Midgard. Hence, forcing Kratos and Atreus to embark on the journey to honor Faye’s dying request.

To prevent Ragnarok, Odin ordered his son Baldur to find and kill Atreus in Jotunheim.

Note: Ragnarok is the prophesized downfall of Odin’s Kingdom, Asgard.

Why did Faye mention Atreus as Loki in God of War 4?

In God of War 4, Faye mentions Atreus as Loki because as a Frost Giant, she could foresee her son (who she wanted to name Loki) catalyzing Ragnarok. But, Kratos ended up naming Atreus after a legendary Spartan warrior he had fought alongside.

Odin was responsible for destroying Jotunheim and the Frost Giants. As the last guardian of Jotnar, Faye was furious at the merciless killing of her race. With the help of precognition, Faye foresaw falling in love with Kratos and bearing his child. A child who would enable Ragnarok.

Hence, when Kratos and Atreus are on their way to the peak of Jotunheim, Baldur tries to stop them. But Atreus kills him with aid from Kratos. And as Mimir had suggested with a few hints earlier in the game, the killing of Baldur moved Ragnarok forward by 100 winters.

Kratos and Atreus then proceed to the peak and spread Faye’s ashes. In a cave nearby, they come across murals painted by Laufey depicting the whole story of this God of War game. And, Atreus learns the truth of Faye’s identity and about him being Loki.

In the final scene of God of War, when they head back home, Atreus dreams of a man of thunder showing up at their doorstep. He wakes up feeling restless and describes the dream to Kratos. But, Kratos ends up dismissing it.

Atreus is part Frost Giant so he may have inherited the ability of precognition from his mother. Meaning his visions probably will come true, and the man he dreamt of will be the God of Thunder, Thor. Players have already beaten his brother, Baldur, and his sons, Magni and Modi. Keep in mind, he isn’t going to be happy when you meet him in God of War Ragnarok.
