Does Thor die? Who kills him? How to defeat him? – God of War Ragnarok

The legendary God of Thunder, Thor, was one of the first Gods confirmed to feature in the latest installment of the God of War series, GoW Ragnarok. You will first come across Thor during the early parts of their GoW Ragnarok playthrough when he confronts Kratos for killing his sons, Magni and Modi, in the previous installment.

Since he’s one of the most loved characters despite his unflattering portrayal in God of War Ragnarok, many players are wondering if Thor will die.

SPOILERS AHEAD! This page contains spoilers from God of War Ragnarok.

Yes, Thor dies toward the end of God of War Ragnarok. Although during the conclusion of Kratos’ second boss fight against Thor, he’s ready to kill the God of Thunder, he decides against it for the sake of their children. However, a furious Odin appears shortly after and drives a spear through Thor’s heart, killing him.

As you’ll eventually find out, Odin has been the perpetrator of most murders committed by Thor. Consequently, when Kratos’ words pierce through his heart amidst the heat of battle, he drops his revered hammer in hopes of not serving as his father’s contract killer anymore. The moment the all-seeing Odin realizes this, he appears out of thin air, chastises his son, and kills him for failing to murder Kratos.

To reach his part of the game, you must first defeat (technically) Thor in the boss fight. Here’s how you can defeat Thor in God of War Ragnarok.

Kratos Vs. Thor (Left to Right)

As mentioned above, Thor is the penultimate boss in God of War Ragnarok. The cutscene encompassing his death is preceded by a boss fight between him and Kratos. Here’s how you can defeat Thor in your second encounter with him in God of War Ragnarok.

Main Quest – The Realms at War

Battle Arena – The Great Lodge of Asgard

No. of Phases – 3

Phase #1

Thor Launching an Attack with the Red Circle

One of Thor’s attacks involves him pounding the ground with his hammer, with a red circle appearing around him. The ring signifies the range of his attack, so stay away from them. While launching this attack, Thor stands still and defenseless, so use this opportunity to get close to him and deal damage.

Moreover, he can launch several melee attacks, most of which are pretty average. But there’s a red attack where he grabs Kratos and pulls him close to inflict damage. Try to avoid such attacks to avoid being caught.

Next, he uses Mjolnir to launch more red attacks involving lightning strikes. In case Thor uses his hammer to initiate a grounded attack, dodge them while maintaining a safe distance. If it’s an aerial attack, dodging can be difficult as it needs to be well-timed.

Also, make sure to respond to Thor’s attacks after dodging them. Your best bet is to use unique attacks and rely on Spartan Rage. Subsequently, when he loses three health bars, a scripted event will take place, followed by the commencement of Phase 2.

Phase #2

Thor Launching an Attack with the Blue Circle

Most threatening attacks in the second phase consist of a blue attack. To disrupt this attack, sprint towards Thor and repeatedly hit him with your shield. Feel free to improvise and use one of your preferred attacks in the follow-up.

At this point, Thor can launch melee combos, i.e., red attacks followed by yellow attacks, then red. As a result, the course of action is to avoid getting hit by dodging the same.

Once you reach the part where Thor only has four health bars left, a freshly scripted wrestling scene will begin, followed by the commencement of Phase 3.

Phase #3

Thor Initiating his Smash-like Attack

In the final phase, you must beware of Thor’s attack, where he jumps into the sky and lands on a red circle target with massive force. The good news is that you can instantly attack him after he lands, as he will take a while to resume attacking.

Also, he’ll teleport quite often in this phase, and right after he appears in a new location, he will launch a melee attack. So, be ready to dodge it in the blink of an eye.

Keep at it until an opportunity to get a hold of Thor while he’s stunned appears. Then, run up to him and click on R3 repeatedly. Subsequently, a scripted action scene will take place, and once you’re done butchering him with the Leviathan Axe, the intended cutscene will begin.

In this cutscene, Thor has a change of heart, and Odin kills him mercilessly.
