Xbox Series X|S Now Supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos Features

At launch, the Xbox Series X and Series S had promised support for Dolby Vision gaming, as well as Dolby Atmos right out of the box. Well, Microsoft has finally made good on that promise. These features are going to be available on the Xbox Series X|S from today.

Dolby Vision has been highly anticipated and asked for by Xbox Series X users. It is a standardized version of high-dynamic-range (HDR) technology, enabling darks to look darker and lights to look brighter. This feature can only be used if the TV the Xbox is connected to also supports Dolby Vision.

Dolby Atmos is the audio-enhancing functionality that provides more precise surround-sound capabilities, but it is not exclusive to certain pieces of hardware. Xbox had confirmed right at the reveal of the Xbox Series X|S that Dolby Vision gaming support would be available on the consoles but was not ready when the consoles launched a year ago.

The announcement of the features came from a post uploaded onto Xbox Wire.

Kattie Slattery, Senior Program Manager at Microsoft and author of the article, detailed the other features coming with Dolby Vision gaming. Players can expect the improvements that come with Dolby Vision, such as a richer, fuller set of colors, and wider contrast, which should help with visibility in light and dark scenes.

Slattery also notes that Xbox has been working with developers to take full advantage of Dolby Vision in their games, and over 100 current optimized titles will support the feature. Thousands of older games will also be receiving image enhancements.

Experience Dolby Vision On Xbox Series X|S

To fully enjoy the features coming to the Xbox, users must make sure of certain parameters. The first, and most important, is to have a TV compatible with Dolby Vision. Most recent TVs include this feature and other gaming-specific features such as automatic low-latency mode (ALLM) or variable refresh rate (VRR).

Once these features are activated and the Xbox has been appropriately updated, the console will handle the rest, automatically enabling Dolby Vision wherever it is applicable. Depending on the TV’s capabilities, Dolby Atmos may be able to take advantage of the Xbox Series X’s features such as DirectX Raytracing and 120 FPS frame rates.

We’re glad that the feature will be supported not just by future games but also improve the games of the past. This should breathe new life into many older titles, especially some favorites in the Xbox community.
