GoT Author George R.R. Martin Says Elden Ring “Looks Incredible”

Elden Ring is one of this year’s most awaited games, and it seems whoever sees even a bit of it walks away thoroughly impressed. This is the case with Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin who took to his personal blog to call the upcoming action RPG “incredible.”

He acknowledged the game has been in development for a long time now, describing how he “did [his] bit and handed off to [his] new friends in Japan” before “years passed.” He also talked about FromSoftware’s “groundbreaking stuff with gorgeous art” and how he helped with “just a bit of worldbuilding.”

A few years back, Hidetaka Miyazaki and his incredible team of game designers, the creators of the Dark Souls video game series, reached out from Japan to ask me to help them create the backstory and history for a new game they were working on.

Thanks to Martin’s involvement in the project, we have grand, mythological heroes such as Godfrey in Elden Ring’s world. An offer like creating the lore and mythos for a world like the one we experience in Elden Ring is an offer very hard for a fantasy writer to give up. Martin might not write the in-game text, but the game’s history and backstory were, and the influence is evident.

In the blog post, he said that he does not have much experience playing video games, and even less when it comes to making them. He states he once played strategy games like Railroad Tycoon but was unfamiliar with FromSoftware’s work before this collaboration.

George R.R. Martin fans are hopeful that his writing will add more depth to Elden Ring. However, as was expected, some replies to his tweets openly questioned why the author was working on a video game instead of his next book.

Some even outright told him to get on with writing Winds of Winter, which has been in progress for nearly a decade now. But it’s nice to see Martin is just as excited as other gamers for Elden Ring.

Elden Ring is the next major title to be released by FromSoftware, the developers of Demon’s Souls, Bloodborne and the Dark Souls franchise. Elden Ring is set to release on the February 25th, 2022.

The game is set in a world known as The Lands Between. Players will take control of a Tarnished to explore these lands and uncover the secrets it holds. The game is an open-world style title with emphasis on combat and traversal. There is also a multiplayer component, along players to summon others for co-operative play, or to be invaded for PvP encounters.
