Epic Games Is Now Attacking Apple Australia!

En route to the incoming trial of Apple and Epic Games in May 2021, the latter has launched legal proceedings against Apple Australia, under the pretext that Apple is breaching the country’s consumer law and the iOS App Store is “Anti-competitive.”

For those unaware, the past couple of months have been pretty rough for Epic Games. Following an update in Fortnite that allowed players to purchase V-bucks, the in-game currency from Epic Games itself, both Google and Apple immediately removed the app from their respective stores because the update essentially bypasses the payment system set up by the tech giants.

Because of this, Epic filed a lawsuit against both the companies, but it backfired when Apple proceeded to threaten that they’ll remove Epic’s developer account from their App store, meaning that Epic won’t be able to develop games for Apple’s devices in the future.

All this is what started Epic’s endless stream of misery, which is set to end in 2021. But, now Epic seems to be firing back, seeing how they filed a lawsuit in the Federal Court of Australia against Apple.

“Various sections of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010.” In a recent interview, when asked what Epic’s real motive is in all this, Tim Sweeney, the CEO, replied that “It’s another set of laws under which Apple’s practices are clearly in violation. And another chance to get this issue really thoroughly examined.”

“And also, there’s a really big and growing mobile software industry in Australia, a lot of great game developers, and they all suffer dearly by Apple and Google’s 30 per cent tax. I doubt there’s a single developer in Australia who makes more profit from their own games then Apple and Google make from their games.”

Apple Australia is yet to issue an official statement to the lawsuit, but whatever the case may be, it’ll certainly be interesting to see how it all turns out.
