The Last of Us Part 1 provides a ton of collectibles for players to find. But some of the collectibles are hidden throughout the whole game in different locations. One of those collectibles are Training Manuals which are essentially books that are used to upgrade specific skills and weapons in the game.
Training Manuals are used to upgrade Joel’s crafted items so he can use them in better ways. These help players improve the tools so they can use them more effectively and efficiently in combat. There are a total of 12 Training Manuals hidden throughout the game.
Some of these Training Manuals are very powerful and crucial in killing deadlier enemies so we’ll make sure you know where to find them. The locations of all the Training Manuals and what they do are given below:
1Training Manual 1—Shiv: Sharpening
Location: The first Training Manual in the game can be found in Bill’s Town. After escaping from the trap where you shoot at enemies upside down and being saved by Bill, he’ll take you to a bar filled with collectibles. The manual will be on the bar countertop which is hard to miss.
What it does: This manual lets you use your shiv twice instead of just once (not applicable to shiv doors). Shivs are especially useful against Clickers.
2Training Manual 2—Health: Splinting
Location: This manual can be found early in the Pittsburgh mission. After the first ambush, and escaping through the garage, go upstairs and turn right to find a room full of just mattresses. If you turn left, you’ll find the Training Manual at the corner of one of the mattresses.
What it does: This Training Manual upgrades your health kits, allowing you to restore 33% more health than before.
3Training Manual 3—Shiv: Reinforcement
Location: In the Pittsburgh mission, when Joel and Ellie enter a hotel, arriving through the window and ending up in a lobby, you’ll notice a safe on the right, just behind the reception desk.
The code for the safe can be found by taking the ladder and placing it along the broken staircase to reach the ledge. This will lead to a suitcase with the code. Go back to the safe and use the code to obtain your Training Manual.
What it does: This manual will allow you to use your shivs for two or three more times, depending on if you collected the first Training Manual (not applicable on shiv doors).
4Training Manual 4—Melee: Knots
Location: Further in the Pittsburgh mission after Ellie saves Joel from being drowned in a puddle by a guy, head up the stairs and go past the bathrooms and you’ll find a dead end. Before vaulting over the blockade of tables, you’ll find the manual placed in front of the tables.
What it does: This manual makes your melee weapon modifications last longer than before. This applies to all melee weapons but not firearms.
5Training Manual 5—Molotov: Construction
Location: At the end of the Pittsburgh chapter, after escaping the armored vehicle and meeting Henry and Sam, wait for the cutscene to end. After the cutscene ends, turn right into the kitchen, and on the countertop will be the manual you’re looking for.
What it does: This manual increases your Molotov explosion radius by 1.5 times. Molotovs are great for crowd control so this manual will come in handy.
6Training Manual 6—Bomb: Containment
Location: After escaping the armored vehicle for a second time, and ending up in the sewers, you’ll trigger a sound trap while walking through a door.
Vault over the table ahead (on your right collect the Shorty weapon) and keep going forward until you see a shelving unit against the wall. On the middle shelf, next to some blue plastic containers, you’ll find the manual.
What it does: This manual will increase the explosion radius of Nail Bombs by 1.5 times. The name is a bit misleading but it is helpful.
7Training Manual 7—Melee: Techniques
Location: After escaping the sewers and out in the proper Suburbs, follow the road down and you’ll notice an ice cream truck. Go into the brick house on the left and head upstairs.
After heading upstairs, if you look up, you’ll notice a hatch for an attic that you’ll be able to interact with. Joel will destroy the attic ladder by mistake but boost up Ellie and she’ll obtain the Training Manual for you.
What it does: This manual allows your melee weapon modifications to last one or two hits longer depending on if you collected the first melee manual.
8Training Manual 8—Smoke: Chemistry
Location: After reaching Tommy’s Dam and reuniting with him, he’ll give you a tour of the whole place. After seeing the dog called Buckley (do not forget to pet Buckley), go inside and you’ll notice a bunch of men leaning over blueprints.
To the left of them is a weapon modification workbench and to the left of the workbench is a table where you’ll find the Training Manual on the countertop.
What it does: This manual allows the effects of Smoke Bombs to last for an additional ten seconds.
9Training Manual 9—Health: Sterilization
Location: After a while, you’ll arrive at the University of Eastern Colorado. Keep progressing through the mission normally until you see a courtyard with a statue in the middle, and you’ll notice a bunch of monkeys who run away when they see you.
Head right and climb the blue dumpster before reaching a lower roof. Jump through the window on the right, and on a desk, next to a monitor, by the windows, you’ll find your manual.
What it does: This manual increases the amount of health restored from Health Kits by 67%.
10Training Manual 10—Molotov: Deployment
Location: Go far enough in the University and Joel will break down a gate using a rolling dumpster. Progress by climbing through the window of the Science Building and then follow the corridors left for Room 205. Shiv the door open and you’ll obtain the Training Manual.
What it does: This manual increases the explosion radius of Molotovs by 2 times, and it stacks with the previous Molotov Training Manual upgrade.
11Training Manual 11—Smoke: Shaping
Location: In the winter chapter, play till you are in control of Joel once again. While making your way to the lodge, you’ll notice a gas station on the right of the street. To the left is a motel where you’ll want to take a detour. On the other side of the motel, is a shed. Crack it open with a shiv, and you’ll obtain the Training Manual.
What it does: This manual will increase the duration of Smoke Bombs by 20 seconds.
12Training Manual 12—Bombs: Shrapnel
Location: The final Training Manual can be found at the Bus Depot in Salt Lake City in one of the final parts of the game. While underground and making your way through the tunnel fighting the infected, clickers and bloaters, you’ll notice a white truck with the word “RNB EXPRESS” written on it with faded letters. Climb the truck and on top of it, you’ll find the final Training Manual.
What it does: This manual doubles the explosion radius of Nail Bombs.
About The Last of Us Part 1
The Last of Us is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The Remake of the title was developed for the PlayStation 5.
Players control Joel, tasked with caring for Ellie and delivering her to a group called The Fireflies. In a world overrun by the cordyceps fungus, which has infected humanity, Joel must fight off those who have become a host to the fungus and survivors looking to harm them.
The Last of Us received overwhelming praise from both players and critics alike. A remaster was released in 2014 for the PlayStation 4.
