Flying in Horizon Forbidden West Neither Confirmed Nor Denied

Flying in Horizon Forbidden West Neither Confirmed Nor Denied

Ever since the original State of Play gameplay reveal, Guerilla Games has been steadily releasing more and more information regarding Horizon Forbidden West. We saw Aloy employ a range of new traversal methods, including free climbing, a grappling hook, and the Shieldwing – a futuristic glider.

But, and this has been asked for since the launch of the first game, what about flying? Even though developers liked the idea, Guerilla had to cut that traversal option out of the first game due to technological limitations. In a recent interview, Game Director Mathis De Jonge didn’t deny, but neither confirm, the existence of a flying mechanic in Forbidden West.

We are aware that this feature is very, very high on the wishlists of many gamers, but I cannot confirm or deny anything about this. I can only talk about what’s in the actual gameplay demo that we showed.

Mathis De Jonge, Game Director

We’re hoping that flying is definitely a part of this game. Horizon Zero Dawn has a sizeable map, and while fast traveling was always an option, flying would have made it much easier and more fun to explore. So, while it hasn’t been confirmed yet for Forbidden West, we are hopeful that it’s an ace Guerilla is keeping up its sleeve.

But, a similar problem to Zero Dawn may occur. Forbidden West‘s development and playtesting were done, keeping the PS4’s hardware in mind. As the game will be releasing on the previous-gen console as well, this was done to ensure that the PS4 would not be bogged down and need the power of the PS5 to play the game adequately. Given this, we may not be able to see Aloy tame and ride on some Sunwings this time either.

De Jonge also revealed that Guerilla had already reached the beta milestone for Horizon Forbidden West, giving us hope that the Holiday season launch window is still viable and we’ll get to play the game this year.

We have just successfully completed our beta milestone, which is pretty far along. We’re now in the final stages of development. So we are polishing the game and fixing bugs. We are also wrapping up certain aspects of the game, like some of the machines being behind schedule – because it takes an enormous amount of time to build them. We’re working on the final cinematic. So, we’re really wrapping up. There’s still a lot to do with a game of this size and magnitude, but we’re in the final stages.

Mathis De Jonge, Game Director

We’ll have to wait till E3 to know more about the game and whether we’ll be able to take to the skies. Horizon Forbidden West will release PS4 and PS5, with the PS5 version boasting improvements such as better visuals, a 60FPS mode DualSense controller support, and 3D audio support.
