Get Double Frame Rates with “Boost Mode” on Xbox Series X|S

Microsoft is adding FPS Boost to the Xbox Series X and Series S, allowing them to run select last-gen titles at double the frame rates.

Till now, only 5 games have been announced to be compatible with this feature, but the backward compatibility team is looking to make more titles compatible in the future.

The titles which have been announced as being compatible are:

  • Far Cry 4
  • New Super Lucky’s Tale
  • Sniper Elite 4
  • UFC 4
  • Watch Dogs 2

With certain titles, we can make the experience even better, all with no work required by the developer, and no update needed by the gamer. To that end, the backward compatibility team has developed FPS Boost, which employs a variety of new methods for nearly doubling (and in a few instances, quadrupling) the original frame rate on select titles.

-Paul Eng, Senior Program Manager, Xbox

Eng also stated that while the games that have been announced are not the most popular titles in the market, they are best able to highlight the improvements granted to them by FPS Boost.

Xbox Series X|S Launch Trailer

“For example, New Super Lucky’s Tale can now run at up to 120 frames per second and UFC 4 delivers improved frame rate performance specifically on Xbox Series S and can now run at 60fps.”

FPS Boost is going to be receiving a lot of work and updates in the future, with the Xbox team looking to make more games compatible, create dedicated menu buttons, and bring system updates this Spring.

It will also be easy to identify if a game is being improved by FPS Boost by clicking the Xbox button on the controller. FPS Boost promises to be a great feature added to the Xbox functionality and we can’t wait until more of our favourite titles are compatible with it.
