As the launch of Intel’s 13th gen Raptor Lake CPUs is approaching, motherboard manufacturers have started releasing BIOS optimization to their current-gen motherboards. These BIOS optimizations for 600-series motherboards add support for Intel’s 13th gen processors.
ASUS, MSI, ASRock, and Gigabyte are the largest motherboard manufacturers in the market, dubbed the Big Four of motherboards. While the first three already announced these BIOS updates a while ago, Gigabyte now follows in their footsteps.
Gigabyte has announced Intel’s 13th gen CPU support for their Z690, B660, and H610 motherboards. This is excellent news for existing users as now they won’t need to upgrade their motherboards if they want to upgrade to Raptor Lake CPUs.
Intel is launching its next-gen 700-series motherboards along with its 13th gen processors. However, as both Alder Lake and Raptor Lake CPUs use the same LGA 1700 socket, the 600-series motherboards will also support Raptor Lake.
Gigabyte highlights that it isn’t releasing BIOS files for “power-up purposes only.” Instead, it will release downloads ensuring “optimal performance, compatibility, and user experiences” from day one.
Hence, there’s no need to rush out and update your BIOS yet. Further optimizations and fine-tuning to come in the weeks ahead will deliver better stability and performance.
Intel’s 14th gen Meteor Lake will use a different socket than the Raptor and Alder Lake. Hence, it shouldn’t be supported on either of the 700 and 600-series motherboards. Meaning you will have to definitely upgrade to the 800-series motherboards if you want to grab on a Meteor Lake processor.
So with both Raptor Lake and 700-series motherboards not having much of a performance gain compared to the current gen options, I suggest you should sit this one out. And even if you want to upgrade your processor, just update your motherboard BIOS, and you should be good to go.

The official download files should be released with, if not before, Intel’s 13th gen processors, which are rumored to launch around September/October.
