According to a recent report, Rockstar Games apparently scaled down its initial plans for Grand Theft Auto 6, reducing the total number of playable characters in the game to two.
Rockstar officially confirmed that GTA 6 was in development earlier in 2022, with multiple new reports shining light on aspects of the anticipated sequel’s development. GTA VI has kept fans waiting for a long time as, year after year, the hype is diminishing.
Earlier news suggested that Grand Theft Auto 6 would have a brother-sister duo as the playable protagonists. This would allow players to play as the first female character in the 3D era of Grand Theft Auto. However, it appears it wasn’t always the case.
Axios’ Stephen Totilo was informed by his sources that Rockstar’s original plan was to have four playable protagonists, but the team had to scale things down to streamline development.
There has been no news about who these extra two characters were, how they would have tied in with the GTA 6 brother-sister storyline, or if the story itself changed due to the reduced number of playable characters.
Moreover, the locations appearing in the game have also been cut down. Previously, GTA 6 was planned to feature three cities and an enormous map covering large parts of both North and South America.
Unfortunately, now the game will only feature a fictional version of Miami which we last saw in GTA: Vice City and GTA: Vice City Stories. Although, it could be that Rockstar adds more cities, missions, and possibly even new characters after the game’s launch in the form of additions or DLCs.
On the Business side of things, this would be beneficial for Rockstar as it would keep the player base constantly hooked. Seeing that GTA Online used the same formula and is, to this date, one of the most played games, Rockstar won’t shy away from doing it again.
If Rockstar wants GTA 6 to have the same longevity as GTA V, launching the game earlier and finishing extra content (like multiple cities) later would be the best strategy. The new missions could also possibly feature different playable characters, slowly bringing them to the storyline.
The number of protagonists needs to be established early during game development, especially in GTA games with story-based missions that usually heavily revolve around their characters.
Rockstar scaling down elements of Grand Theft Auto 6 is unsurprising considering the rumors of a troubled production and purported project resets surrounding the title. Nothing has yet to be officially confirmed, so we will have to wait for Rockstar to officially provide some light on the game, as till then, all is just speculation.
