It has been almost 10 years since GTA V released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and yet we have no concrete news about GTA VI other than the fact that it’s in development. Fans of the series have now been waiting for almost a decade to get a taste of GTA VI.
Rockstar had previously confirmed back in February 2022 that development was ‘well underway’. A build of the game was also previously leaked which showcased some new mechanics and also gave us a first look at the new protagonists.
Industry analysts earlier speculated that the game could arrive in fiscal year 2024 which runs from April 2023 to March 2024. It was speculated that Take Two’s projected net bookings for that fiscal year would be $9 billion.
However, yesterday’s Q4 2023 earnings report has actually revealed a shift in plans. Take-Two reported net bookings of $5.28 billion for the recently concluded fiscal year, due to GTA V, GTA Online, RDR 2 and Zynga’s mobile portfolio bringing in $1.4 billion.
Take Two has offered new forecasts for the next three fiscal years, expecting to earn $5.55 billion in net bookings in fiscal year 2024. The breakdown of titles scheduled to release next fiscal year has shown that GTA VI won’t be there, implying a delay to fiscal year 2025.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has said that it is a ‘highly anticipated year’ where the company plans to launch several ‘groundbreaking’ titles that will set ‘new standards for the industry’ when talking about fiscal year 2025. We don’t know what titles are planned for fiscal year 2025, but GTA VI could possibly be the ‘groundbreaking’ title.
Interestingly, Take-Two forecasts an even bigger fiscal year for 2026, which implies that the revenue might come from GTA VI itself. It’s worth noting that a new BioShock game is also in development, so revenue could come from both GTA VI and the new BioShock game.
While we don’t know when GTA VI is specifically slated to release, these forecasts serve as a basis for estimating the timeframe during which the game will finally release, so that’s progress! But one thing we know for sure is that the game isn’t coming out until at least next year or later.
