Better Stay Dry, Tommy Still Can’t Swim in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

The Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is set to launch on all major platforms later this week, but some people have already had the chance to play the game. There is a lot of footage floating around online, which you can check out at your own risk of spoilers. While many changes and improvements are coming to the game, there seems to be one thing that has remained from 20 years ago in Vice City – Tommy still can’t swim.

Vice City has been modeled after what we know as Miami City, a location situated on the coast, implying that a large part of the map will include water. There are a lot of boats to help you move around, but those who have played the original will remember that Tommy Vercetti can’t swim. The main character dies as soon as he comes in contact with any body of water.

A video showing off footage from the remastered version of Vice City has shown that Tommy hasn’t learned to swim even after two decades. At one point in the video, Tommy ends up in the water, and the player is informed that they have failed the mission. In the original game, the manual warned players to stay away from the water to keep away from sharks, a bluff to keep Tommy’s embarrassing secret hidden.

The real reason Tommy wasn’t able to swim in the original game was simply that Rockstar didn’t have the time to include the mechanic. Since then, mods have been released that allow Tommy to swim, so fans thought the ability might be added to the remaster as well.

Rockstar has been careful to reveal as little as possible about the changes and improvements they have made to the remastered trilogy. While you will be getting the GTA games you know and love, it is still up to the player to find out what has remained, what has been removed, and what has been improved.
