Hacked Cyberpunk 2077 Source Code Goes up for Sale

CDPR announced on Tuesday that they had been victim to a ransomware attack in which hackers had gained access to confidential corporate data. While no user data was lost, data for the studio’s most high-profile games, including an unreleased Witcher game, Gwent and Cyberpunk 2077, had been compromised.

In response to CDPR’s ‘no negotiation’ stance, it seems that the hackers have put up and sold data for Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 on the dark web.

Cybersecurity-related Twitter account, vx-underground, confirmed the sale and close of the auction, on Twitter. The bid, listed on popular hacking forum Exploit, reportedly started at $1 million and had a buy-it-now price for $7 million.

Cybersecurity firm Kela also released screenshots of the post on Exploit, allegedly posted by the attackers, saying that they’ve received an offer for the data from an unknown source outside the forum. They also added that they ended the auction that they were running at the request of the buyer.

KELA analyst Victoria Kivilevich told IGN that the buyer purchased everything in a single discrete package. She also added that KELA doesn’t know who the buyers are, or what their intent is, or what the final sale price was, but it seems likely to have been close to the $7 million price tag initially set by the hackers.

After Cyberpunk 2077’s botched release that caused significant damage to the company’s credibility, this is yet another development that will hit CDPR hard. Between speculation that the hack could have been orchestrated by an insider and the monetary loss that the company will have to bear if their source code is indeed floating around on the internet, it seems that the company is going to be in troubled waters for a long while.

About Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is a 2020 action role-playing video game developed by CD Projekt Red and published by CD Projekt, based on video game designer Mike Pondsmith’s game series.

Set in a dystopian cyberpunk universe, the player assumes the role of “V,” a mercenary in the fictional Californian city known as “Night City,” where they deal with the fallout from a heist gone wrong that results in an experimental cybernetic “bio-chip” containing an engram of the legendary rock star and terrorist Johnny Silverhand (played by Keanu Reeves) threatening to slowly overwrite V’s mind; as the story progresses V and Johnny must work together to find a way to be separated and save V’s life.
