Xbox Series X|S Will Not Be Getting Hardware Upgrades Anytime Soon

If you were looking forward to purchasing an updated Xbox Series console in the near future, we’ve got some sad news. In the latest episode of IGN’s Podcast Unlocked, Phil Spencer, Head of Xbox, confirmed that the current Xbox Series X|S models will be the only models available to buy for the next several years.

Spencer also added that fans wouldn’t be missing out on any developments in 2022 if they decide to pick up an Xbox in 2021.

There’s nothing that’s going to come out next year that’s going to make you feel like, oh, I should have waited. These are the consoles that we have in markets for years. And we built them with that in mind, and I love the tech that’s in there and that capability, and that’s where our focus is going.

So currently, it sounds like Microsoft has no plans to expand the Series line-up as it did with the Xbox One – the previous-gen console range saw the addition of the Xbox One X and Xbox One S.

However, this does not mean that the Series range won’t see any update ever. An eventual expansion is still on the cards.

We want to do hardware because it actually creates new opportunities, and I’ve said before, it could be at the lower end that we find more immediate opportunities.

So, those worrying that their Xbox Series S or X will become outdated in a short while can rest easy.

However, those still unable to get their hands on the X or S might have to worry for a while; Microsoft, like Sony, is dealing with severe supply issues as the global semiconductor shortage refuses to let up. Chip manufacturers say this shortage will persist throughout 2021, maybe even longer.

Could we see news on a new Xbox console by the time chips become more ubiquitous? Only time will tell. However, it would be wise for Microsoft to put plans in place as Sony is already working on improving the PS5.
