How to defeat the Stone Ancient in God of War 4?

Defeating Stone Ancient

In God of War 4, you can defeat the Stone Ancient by throwing your Leviathan ax and pieces of his heart towards his glowing chest. You’ll also have to attack him with dislodged ruins of his heart. As a result, he will take on damage, and his hitpoints will drop down to zero.

You have to time your attacks as regular attacks will give the Stone Ancient little to no damage. Thus, the key is patience. He moves slowly because of his enormous size, so it’ll be easy for you to dodge his attacks. Furthermore, wait for him to attack you first with his beam of ice.

While the Stone Ancient launches an attack, you’ll be able to see his heart through his glowing chest. You have to throw your ax at it. Make sure to take the cover of the rubble present in the middle. His beam of ice attack can slow you down and inflict heavy damage.

When you land a successful attack on the Stone Ancient’s heart, two pieces of his heart will get dislodged. Try to pick those pieces up while maintaining a safe distance from the Stone Ancient. If you go too close to him, he’ll fall on the ground on all four limbs and send out unblockable blinding energy.

Once you pick up the fallen pieces of the Stone Ancient’s heart, use them to attack his glowing chest. A successful attack will leave him stunned and most vulnerable. Then you’ve to jump on him and inflict heavy damage. After repeating the same attack pattern, a few Dark Elves will spawn. It implies that the Stone Ancient is nearing its end.

End all the Dark Elves by taking Atreus’ help since he can target and distract enemies with his bow and arrow. And then go on to finally kill the Stone Ancient.

Note: In God of War 4, you should use an Exile armor set with a level two Leviathan ax to fight the Stone Ancient.

What rewards do I get on killing Stone Ancient?

On killing the Stone Ancient, you’ll receive a reward. It’ll consist of an Ancient’s heart, five pieces of soft Svartalfheim steel, a load of Hacksilver, and a rare enchantment called Fragmented Heart of Alfheim.

Who are the Ancients in God of War 4?

Stone Ancient

In God of War 4, Ancients are a race of elemental golems who have existed since the beginning of time. They’re the lingering parts of Ymir, the original Jotunn. He is also the first being that came into existence in the Nine Realms.

Apart from the one in Alfheim, most Ancients are in Midgard. They camouflage themselves in landscapes thanks to having bodies of rock. Their bodies contain a single element like fire, ice, or lava, consisting of a torso, head, and limbs.

Ancients function with the help of a heart but lack any sensory organs. They have no mouth, hence, being incapable of speech. Still, they’re sentient creatures who are capable of engaging in combat.

Ancients hibernate for centuries and awaken only when they’ve been disturbed from their slumber. In God of War 4, apart from the Stone Ancient, the types of Ancients known are:

  • Fire Ancient
  • Lava Ancient
  • Forest Ancient
  • Frost Ancient
  • Ice Ancient

Note: Ancients are the only beings Atreus is incapable of telepathically hearing.

Ringed Temple

In God of War 4, you’ll find the Stone Ancient waiting for you on the top of a platform. It’s inside the Ringed Temple in the Lake of Light region of Alfheim.

During the Light of Alfheim quest, you’ll have to restore power to the light bridges. You can do so by climbing onto the platform after Atreus nearly gets kidnapped.

Note: Ancients are like the Stone Talos, Bronze Talos, Elemental Talos, Titan Minotaur, and Automaton from the previous installments of God of War.
