Are incantations upgradable? How to scale incantations? – Elden Ring

Elden Ring’s magic spells feature has been passed down from the previous Souls games. However, they are here to mesmerize you with a few changes. With the help of these spells, players become capable of enhancing, defending, and attacking based on their situation.

Moreover, Elden Ring possesses two types of magic spells: sorceries and incantations. The primary difference is that sorceries consume INT (Intelligence) while incantations utilize FAITH.

Additionally, sorceries consist of the more conventional magical abilities, such as ranged projectiles and magical sword attacks, while incantations utilize sacred holy magic for healing and repelling the alive. Incantations also use fire magic that fuels itself from the dragon communion.

Players need FP (Focus Points) to use spells, which is also the cost of purchasing weapon skills. As a result, you need to think wisely before utilizing them alongside each other when you build a hybrid class. Due to such restrictions, you might wonder about resorting to certain spells and upgrading them to a deadly extent.

You can’t manually upgrade incantations and spells in Elden Ring. Nevertheless, as you progress further in the game, you encounter similar spells with heightened effects and statistics.

Since magical spells of Elden Ring aren’t upgradable, it’s almost necessary to find a way to increase the damage inflicted through such incantations. You can do so by incantation scaling. It depends primarily on the player’s equipment, skills, and temporary buffs.

Here’s more about how you can scale incantations in Elden Ring!

Incantation Scaling in Elden Ring

Incantation Scaling

The game doesn’t allow players to scale incantations by themselves. You can’t scale Dragon spells with Arcane or other attributes.

You need a special seal to activate incantation scaling and scale the desired incantations. Such seals include the Dragon communion seal, Finger seal, and the ClawMark seal. In addition, spell scaling is based on the player’s sacred seal stats.

The Dragon communion seal serves to scale your incantations, including Dragon spells, with Arcane and Faith. On the other hand, the ClawMark seal scales your incantations with the Strength attribute.

Note: Players can use Smithing Stone resources to enhance their spell damage and sacred seal scaling.

A couple of instances of incantation scaling with the ClawMark seal are given below:

  • Lighting Spear with the ClawMark seal +0, 16 Strength, and 41 Faith results in 423 damage
  • Lighting Spear with the ClawMark seal +0, 26 Strength, and 41 Faith results in 471 damage

Which attribute should you invest in to maximize incantation scaling in Elden Ring?

In comparison to Faith, Arcane assists in increased damage during incantation scaling. For instance, 10 Arcane points belonging to scaling rank C deal more damage than 10 Faith points belonging to scaling rank D. Faith and Strength have similar scaling effects.

Investing in Arcane appears wiser if players wish to scale Dragon spells or use the Dragon seal. This is because while using the Dragon seal or the Dragon spells, most of the incantation scaling results from the Arcane attribute.

Incantation Scaling with Strength

Incantation Scaling with Strength

You might notice that the Finger seal boosts incantation scaling with the Faith attribute. Although theoretically, the Finger seal should scale a bit with the Strength attribute, players experience no significant increase in lighting spear damage with 10 points of Strength.

This anomaly is due to the absence of the aforementioned special tool named the ClawMark seal. Strength scaling on sacred seals initiates only upon the swinging of the seal, similar to a physical weapon. Consequently, all Glintstone staffs possess Strength scaling.

Since the Golden Order seal and Dragon communion seal are not physical seals, they don’t sanction Strength scaling. They’re formless and can’t be rotated as physical weapons. Upon carefully going through the description of these seals, you’ll notice that they’ve zero weight.

Note: Dragon seal +2 outperforms Finger seal +4 when used on the Fireball incantation.
