How to Smelt Metal in Valheim? – A Complete Guide

Adventuring out into the wildlands is a must in Valheim but adventuring becomes a little too difficult when you run into strong enemies and all you have is a stone axe. You need to be equipped with some powerful weapons and armors. And that can only be achieved by mining and smelting the ores you find.

Valheim’s vast map has an abundant supply of Iron, Tin, and even Copper deposits that you can mine. But before you even think about mining for these precious resources, your first order of business is to make a Pickaxe and a Forge.

For the Pickaxe, you can start with making a Stone Pickaxe or if you’ve already defeated Eikthyr you can use its antler to make the Antler Pickaxe as well.

For Forge, players only need 4 stones, 4 coals, 10 wood, and 6 copper to make it. So, grab your Pickaxe and head for the black forest to mine some copper ores.

You must be wondering what other ores you can mine in Valheim, right? Well, to quickly answer your question, there are copper, tin, and even iron deposits for you to mine.

Mining Copper Deposit

i. Copper

Copper can be found deep in the Black Forest. The Copper deposits are covered by moss and appear green from above.

ii. Tin

Tin deposits are found near the shores of Black Forest and also deep in the forest. The deposits appear to be silver and shiny in color.

iii. Bronze

Bronze is made by smelting copper and tin together. For one bronze bar, 2 copper bars and 1 tin bar are required. Copper ores and tin ores can be smelted into bars.

iv. Iron

Iron is made by refining scrap irons in the smelter. Scrap irons are found in Muddy Scrap Piles in the Sunken Crypt area.

Now that you have the ores, you need to refine them in the smelter. Smelting one metal bar each time requires 2-3 coal, so you might want to make a Charcoal Kiln to get coal easily.

Here comes the tricky part, each of the Smelter and the Charcoal Kiln requires 5 Surtling Cores. Getting those is quite difficult as they are inside underground caves surrounded by enemies.

2. How to Get Surtling Cores in Valheim?

Obtaining Surtling Core

Surtling Cores are found deep inside the Burial Chambers located underground. These Burial Chambers can be spotted if skeletons appear above the entrance to protect the cave.

Remember, these skeletons can do a lot of damage so make sure you have food, shield, and a club ready when fighting. The caves are dark so don’t forget to grab a torch when you venture inside.

A cool trick you can do is to hit the skeletons with a torch. Fire will deal a lot of damage to the skeleton and you can get rid of them easily once they are on fire.

If you get enough Surtling Cores, you can make the Charcoal Kiln and Smelter. I’m providing the recipes for you to easily make them.

Charcoal Kiln – 20 Stones and 5 Surtling Cores make a Charcoal Kiln. To make coal, simply put wood inside it and wait for it to turn to coal.

Smelter – Crafting Smelter needs 20 Stones and 5 Surtling Cores. Smelter requires coal to work.

With the ores gathered, Smelter and Charcoal Kiln built, it’s time for you to put your Smelting skills to the test.
